The R380 was discontinued in 2011. I don’t think there is a driver from ATTO (the 4.03 driver for the R380) that will work with Yosemite.
So that’s not going to work.
As for the G-Speed’s – they are 3G chassis. Would it work with a new ATTO R680, that has current drivers – yes, (probably) and you probably would not lose your data. Would it work with a Highpoint or Areca card ? Maybe.
Never tried it. Would it work with a Newer Tech card – absolutely not.Bob Zelin

I see no reason not to use the new Mac Book Pro as a server. To do it today, right now, you need the Lacie 12Big (which is not out yet), and an ATTO Thunderbolt 3 to 10G adaptor to feed a Netgear 10G switch. But as you can imagine, every one that you see advertising here will come out with a full line of Thunderbolt 3 products – certainly by April 2017 for NAB, and who knows what Apple has in mind for the iMac and Mac Mini. But yes, the laptop would absolutely work.

my observations on this article –
The Anker Thunderbolt 3 hub is dirt cheap, and will “do the job” for many people.
I know that Sonnet and Highpoint will release products like this (Cal Digit already has) but today is not that day.
And of course OWC and Akitio will have full product lines to show for Thunderbolt 3 as well.The Promise Pegasus 3 and SanLink3 are discussed in a April 2016 press release from Promise, but these products are
not on the “Products” section of the Promise website, nor does B&H show this product with “coming soon”.
From what I see, ATTO is the only one with Thunderbolt 3 to 10G and 40G adaptors that are ready. And Lacie and Highpoint appear to be “ready” with the larger arrays, and are “coming soon”. I am sure that Promise (and G-Tech and Maxx Digital and others) will follow soon.As for Symply, I am certainly anxious to see what they come out with, but being based on StorNext, I can’t imagine this system being inexpensive, or easy to configure. Most systems today, from EVERY manufacturer are pretty inexpensive, and set up very easily, and once setup, do not require system administration to keep running. XSAN systems, of course, are someone’s full time career, which is why most companies don’t incorporate XSAN into their facilities these days. To keep an IT guy on staff just to keep your shared storage running is pretty ridiculous in 2016. Perhaps Symply has some tricks up their sleeve, that will make things work much easier in the future than the old XSAN or Quantum StorNext systems.
LumaForge is an a great position, as FCP X will now be taken much more seriously in my opinion. And while 10G Ethernet is really more than enough for almost everyone’s workflow today, it will take very little for LumaForge to install 40G Mellanox cards into their server chassis, and make their boxes blazing fast.
As for QNAP – well, that’s what I mostly do these days. QNAP is offering 10G shared storage at ridiculous low prices. Up until 2015, the 10G cards for QNAP’s were options. Today, many QNAP systems come standard with 10G cards. And QNAP fully supports the Mellanox 40G product line – who knows – perhaps the next gen will have 40G cards standard, just like the 10G cards are standard now in many models.
I never thought Apple would pull this off, or even care, but they did. It should be an exciting 2017 for new products (while most of us cry “I have to go out and buy new stuff all over again !!!!!”).

yes, you can setup SMB on OS X Server. SMB is not a grueling implementation. It’s on by default.
SMB is now native to Mac OS X Server. You don’t have to do anything.If you need help let me know.
PS – I have NOT tried FCP-X 10.3 yet. Charlie Austin on Cow says it works, but I have clients that are saying it’s not working.

I thought it was a great and accurate article. The future is not YOU (including me – the old guys) – its the new generation that will not be doing the conventional kind of work that we currently do. The analogy is saying “Adobe Photoshop will never unseat the Quantel Paintbox”. Or – “the HP Laser Printer will never affect the printing business”.
Or “MP3’s will never affect record and CD sales”. Because in real life – good enough is good enough. For “us” to remain employed, we must embrace 6K, 8K, and VR, and every other super hi end technology, because “everyone” will be able to edit video, just like everyone can print out professional paper that used to be handled by countless print shops in every town (that no longer exist). And “everyone” is the big market. Has the iPhone (and the Canon 5D, and the cameras that followed it) kicked the ass out of the professional photography market – you bet it has. There are still professional photographers, but not like before. Because NOW – everyone can take a really good picture, and for many of us, it’s “good enough”.And when it comes to the future of sales – I look at all of you monkeys (bad example here, because this is a FCP-X forum, and the real old guys won’t even be reading a forum like this) – and “we” won’t race out to get the latest Apple computer, because we have 2012 Mac Pro’s with Nvidia GTX-680 cards and big RAID arrays, which work perfectly fine, and we are going to try to squeeze every ounce of life out of them. But the NEW users (the future) – they don’t even own a computer, and when they come in to compete with US, they will buy whatever the hell Apple has for sale, and they will try to compete with us. That is Apple’s real market – not us. And they will charge lower rates than us. And we will say how terrible they are, and how unexperienced they are. But they will do a good job (just like we did when we were young), and Apple will sell them a LOT of new computers, and easy to use software, so they can kick our butts.
So yes – this article was (unfortunately) very accurate. WE are not the future.

I hate to suggest this, but a simple pair of standard plyers, with a little firm pressure should make it twist, and then the same pair of plyers to vertically lift the BNC off the chassis mount connector on the Blackmagic.
I suspect that the cable you were using does not use Kings, or Canare connectors. Perhaps I am wrong. Cheap BNC cables that are manufactured slightly too small (or too large) – even by a tiny fraction, will cause this problem.Bob Zelin

if you don’t mind me asking (perhaps this was mentioned earlier in this LONG thread) – I am under the impression that you are using Thunderbolt bridge networking via AFP to connect to Mac Servers in the office where editing is done.
May I ask you – exactly how many client computers are there, and exactly what drive array are you using in this configuration that you state works perfectly fine for video editing ?Thank you very much (and sorry for driving you crazy with this).
