With Final Cut Pro X 10.3, you can store libraries on thread storage systems that use the SMB protocol, as well as on other shared volumes.

Where to store Final Cut Pro X libraries and external media
•Store libraries on local volumes, Xsan volumes, and shared storage that uses the SMB protocol.
•Store external media on any shared storage volume.

Will we be able to set up SMB Mac servers to use FCPX Libraries in Ethernet networks – for instance, could we set up SMB sharing on a Final Share system? I am not a Network Administrator, but I have seen some grumblings about Apple’s implementation of SMB.

Finally! This is a good move. I hope they test it thoroughly and get the bugs out though.

    Hi Mark –
yes, you can setup SMB on OS X Server. SMB is not a grueling implementation. It’s on by default.
SMB is now native to Mac OS X Server. You don’t have to do anything.

If you need help let me know.
PS – I have NOT tried FCP-X 10.3 yet. Charlie Austin on Cow says it works, but I have clients that are saying it’s not working.
I have not personally done this yet – I just read the article. Believe me I am working on this.

Thanks, Bob. So – to add SMB to our Final Share server, we would need to install Mac OS X server? We do not have that software currently installed. Looking forward to the results of your investigation!
