the Drobo does not offer a 10G solution, so it’s too slow for your application.
The TVS-871T is excellent. But the $3000 QNAP you listed comes with no disk drives in it. You need 8 drives in there, so find a drive you like, multiply by eight and now you have the price of the basic system. It sounds like you only have 2 or 3 computers right now, so you can connect directly to the ports built into the QNAP, and in the future you can purchase a small Netgear 10G switch so you can add more clients. While the QNAP appears that it is a DAS (direct attached storage), this is connected thru Thunderbolt bridging or networking – it does not mount like a Thunderbolt drive, like the Pegasus does.And with that said (because I am a huge fan of the QNAP) – QNAP only supports SMB3 right now. In the future release of QTS 4.3 from QNAP, this will ship with SMB4, which is required for FCP-X 10.3 SMB shared storage. So if you intend to write libraries from FCP-X to the QNAP, it’s only going to happen with NFS network protocol for right now.
If you have zero money, you can use a Mac Mini as a server, but your Pegasus R2 2 drive system is useless for shared storage. If you had an R8, or G-Tech Studio XL with 8 drives, then you could consider this. Without 8 drives, and 10G connection to your “server” you will get crappy performance.
I only wish that Josh would state what his suggestions are here on this forum. There are plenty of wonderful solutions out there from Studio Network Solutions, Small Tree, Maxx Digital, AVID, Facilis, GB Labs, LumaForge, DDP, Editshare, QNAP, Synology, Apace, Netgear, etc. I wonder which one Josh suggests for your limited budget ?

why would you want to keep an old 4G fiber network running, when you can buy wonderful fast modern products, from even the expensive companies like AVID Nexus and Facilis 8D with 32 TB for around 10 grand.
Are you trying to keep an Antique XSAN running when any cheap NAS blows the doors off of it.Face it – your old expensive equipment is obsolete, and you will not get one cent for it on ebay. This has happened over the years in our business – from 1″ machines, D2 machines, Dig Beta, even HD Cam Decks and DVCProHD Decks.
And old AVID’s. You can build a 6 seat AVID Facility with AVID Nexus shared storage for the price of one old AVID Symphony, or AVID Unity (including chairs and desks).It’s OLD – THROW IT OUT.

download AJA Data Calc from https://www.aja.comenter the compression codec you want to work in, and this will answer your question very quickly.
If you have more questions, just ask. No one can answer your question until you state –
how many tapes you have to digitize
and
what compression codec (ProRes 1080, etc.) that you intend to edit in. I don’t care if it’s all standard def NTSC media.
You need to say “we will edit this show in 720p DVCProHD, or 1080i ProRes, or something like that, and then you can have your exact answer. If you can’t answer these questions, then ask your editor what he or she intends to edit with.Bob Zelin

of course, Rainer is correct. Let me assure you, that when you wait for the new Thunderbolt 3 computer, and the new
Thunderbolt 3 drive array, 12 months later, that computer will be obsolete, that drive array will be obsolete, and the new series of Apple computers, with better GPU, faster processors, etc. will be out, and the faster drive arrays will be out.
If you think that there is a 5 year plan, just forget about it. You need to make a living – TODAY (and last year). I assume this is not a hobby for you, and that you make a living doing this. You buy what you need to accomplish this. 8K just came out, and while many people think this is ridiculous, 3 years ago, most people thought that 4K was ridiculous, and now everyone shoots with 4K. And this will happen with 8K. And your drives will not be fast enough that you buy in 2016, and you will have to switch to the (non existant right now) large SSD drives to get the speeds that you need.This means that you will continue to spend money, and spend it again, and again, and again, and every time saying to yourself “I can’t believe I spent all that money just a few years ago, and now it’s all useless and obsolete”. Welcome to the club. There is not one professional that has not gone thru this over the years, over and over again. Just buy something.

the Lacie 12 Big, the Highpoint 8 bay, and the Promise Pegasus 3.
I am sure that by NAB, everyone and their mother will have Thunderbolt 3 solutions.How much are you willing to spend for this ?

you people are all crazy. You think this is politics, like Hillary and Donald ? I truly think that you
are obsessing insanely about this.I am critical of all products, and usually only post when something is wrong, or there are problems. Perhaps
you don’t like that about my personality – and I am sure that companies like AJA and Blackmagic and Adobe
don’t like me when I say negative things I find about their products.But this community is APPLE driven, and our business is Apple driven, from day 1 of AVID Media Composer, and then
onto all the other apps from Media 100, FCP, Premiere, Resolve, and all the hardware peripherals that tie into Apple computers. If you have ever gone to a trade show, like the NAB show, you will see that it’s ALL about Apple computers, even though Apple has decided to not participate on the show floor of NAB. EVERY DAMN MANUFACTURER shows Apple computers.The revenue that comes into Creative Cow (and our industry) is based on Apple products, with a relatively limited focus on Windows based products. So being “prejudice” towards Apple products, or FCP-X (possibly the most popular forum on Cow, and what convinces advertisers to advertise here) is completely ridiculous. Money comes into Creative Cow because of the passion for Apple products. And competitors come here to advertise and write articles to compete with that.
I am sure that Creative Cow would LOVE for you to write a review on the new Mac Book Pro with FCP 10.3. Why don’t you volunteer to do this? When I write articles for Cow, I do not charge them one penny. It’s to promote what I do, and what I believe in. I was “prejudice” towards FCP-X until the release of 10.3, because now I see financial benefit for me with this specific release. And so I am no longer prejudice about it, and you will see me review products that relate to thunderbolt 3, and the new Mac Book Pro and it’s use with FCP-X 10.3, because I have personal gain from this. Until I can see personal gain from this, I have no incentive to do so. Please remember that I am not an employee of Creative Cow, and do not accept any money from Creative Cow, or any other manufacturer.
So your perception of “prejudice towards FCP-X” is completely wrong. Cow would welcome your detailed review, and they would publish it. And then morons like me would try to tear it apart. And any objection of criticism towards your review would be identical to someone objecting to the political beliefs of our lovely politicians that we see every day.
