it means that the loser newbies that “have to edit in RAW format” with 8K will be out of room on their 180 TB RAID arrays as quickly as “we” were with 9G drives with AVID. It will NEVER be big enough. Do you actually think that 8K will be a big deal in 2020 ? Do you actually think that 16 TB drives will be a big deal in 2020 ? Do you think that your computer will boot up in 5 seconds in 2020, or will it be as slow as ever. Do you think that Premiere/Resolve/Media Computer will work faster in 2020 with 8K files than it does now. Will your wife think that “the picture is SO MUCH BETTER than it was in 2015” – OF COURSE NOT. This is a game that only WE appreciate. No one else does. And Bill Davis will be the first person to edit with FCP XX on the iWatch and tell us that we are all idiots and that editing 8K on the iWatch is the best thing that ever happened to the professional video industry.bob Zelin

I am listing computer shops in Spain, where you can buy drives. I really don’t understand what is going on with your system. Or your situation.
You can upgrade your computer to a new OS for free.
You can get new Media 100 software for free

I have shown you the only cheap solution (about $120) to quickly resolve your issue. Are you actually questioning spending $120, and perhaps there is a way (for free) to get your antique RAID array to continue to work ? How much did your friend spend to bring you the replacement old Sonnet chassis ? Wasn’t his time and effort worth more than a single $120 4TB SATA drive.
Buy the damn drive, and see what happens. If things don’t work out, it’s time to buy a new computer, or update yours, and use FREE NEW SOFTWARE – just like the FREE Media 100 software, that you already know.
I don’t get what the problem is here.

if your list is accurate, you own everything you need to accomplish exactly what you want.
the QNAP model # that you listed is incorrect –
you have a TVS-871T, not a QVS-871how can you make this work ? Simple. You hire someone to help you.

all Mac Pros (the silver tower that you own) have four slots for SATA drives, with 4 sleds. You simply pop in the drive into an empty sled (you need a phillips screwdriver to screw in the drive to the sled), and the new drive will appear in Apple Disk Utility, where you can erase it, and it will appear on your desktop. You do not need any drivers, and it does not attach to any cables, or any cards.
As for your existing 5 bay port multiplier chassis – they all went bad – not only Sonnet, but Cal Digit, and others that used Sil 3124 port multiplier chips. Sometimes you get lucky for it to come back, sometimes you don’t. You can simply unplug the entire chassis while it is on, and plug it back in. I believe all these chassis have 5 LED lights on the back to see the status of them being on. When you plug the cable back in, you will see the lights flash and then go solid on, when it’s up. If the lights never come on, well, you are screwed. When we used to observe this, we thought “oh, we have a dead drive”, but the drives were never dead – it was the port multiplier technology.

A HGST 4TB NAS drive is $126 US.
This will go right into your Mac Pro, and give you as much storage as your eight 500 Gig drives.
Why are you going thru this aggravation ?The Sonnet port multipler cards and chassis that were based on Silicon Image 3124 chipsets were notorious for failures. Buy a drive, and call it a day.

The TVS-682T is only a 4 bay – so you will get limited speeds. You are not getting 1000 MB/sec or above connection speed with only 4 SATA drives. And if $1800 US is too expensive for a shared storage system, then there is a simple answer – your client does not need shared storage. Work on local drives. This is the cheapest price in history, and if it’s not cheap enough, well, then no shared storage for them !
They are not going to connect with USB3. They can connect via thunderbolt 2, 1G or 10G. 10G will be the fastest.
If they think that they are going to plug in their thunderbolt cables, and it will auto mount like a Thunderbolt drive, they are fooling themselves. The QNAP has to be configured, and assigned static IP addresses for thunderbolt bridging. “Why can’t they make a product that just plugs in and works without all this techno mumbo jumbo”.
Because, that’s why !Everything they want to do is going to be too complicated for them. They need someone qualified to set this up for them. End of story.

all under $3000, not including drives.your 10G switch should ONLY be a Netgear switch (XS708T, not E, for 8 port and XS716T for 16 port).
you will have no issue with 4 – 6 stations and if it’s 4K footage, simply purchase Promise SanLink2 (or SanLink 3 if you have new Thunderbolt 3 Mac’s) – or Sonnet Twin 10G (or Sonnet Presto 10Gbase-T for old Mac Pros) – and you will get crazy speeds that can do 4K, 6k and 8K without issue for ALL systems.
I might as well start this lecture, now that it’s September 2017. I have no idea of how ALL the companies that I have seen at NAB will remain in business as of now. Between QNAP, Synology, Netgear, Asus, and the recent acquisition of Thecus by Foxconn – what chance does any of the American or Western European Manufacturers have a chance of staying in business at this point ?
You are making the right decision. And for you young people reading this post – start to learn Chinese, because the end is near !!!!!

just wanted to update my comments here, as this happened today.
Went to an angry client, who I recently put in a large QNAP system for. “Nothing is connecting”.
I had the client purchase one Sonnet Twin 10G, but on their own, they purchased a bunch of Akitio thunderbolt 2 to 10G adaptors. They leave the computers on all the time, and of course, the Akitio’s were on all the time as well, as they are buss powered. Every computer with the Akitio had the issues. I simply moved the Cat6 cable into the native ports of the iMac’s and everything started to work. The Sonnet is of course, still working.
Try to save $100 per unit – well, you now see what happens.Bob Zelin

Have you ever been on a professional production shoot ? Ever see a DSLR rig, with 10 million accessories, so that you can barely see the actual Canon camera, because there are so many wires, recorders, monitors, matt boxes, batteries, etc. hanging off the tripod you can’t believe that there is a camera under all that mess ?This is what your laptop should look like. It should be a disaster with every damn port filled up with all kinds of crap – monitors, thunderbolt or USB docks, chargers, drives, Blackmagic and AJA products, etc. hanging off your laptop. And if you had a Mac Pro cylinder, it should look the same way – like a spaghetti pile of crap hanging out of your Mac Pro, so if you sneeze, half your cables will get disconnected.
SO – when will this all change? When will the world exist, when you can sit with your nice clean MacBook Pro in a Café, and do uncompressed 8K editing on your laptop (over 10G speed WiFi) while you sip a cappucinno ? When you are a grandfather, that’s when. In the mean time, buy a road case, like the rest of the professionals in the world, and load it up with your external drives, monitors, UPS, docks, card readers, etc, and spend some time in a gym, so you have the strength to pick up your 80 pound portable case to load in and out of your car (when you drive to your local coffee establishment to edit your videos). If people don’t come over to your system in amazement, and go “Oh my God, what is all that stuff”, then you are not a pro.

your English is excellent. I just did not have a clear picture of what you are trying to accomplish. While I have not personally used the Filmlight Flux storage system, it specifically states that it can be used as a generic NAS. I use generic NAS boxes all the time (like QNAP and Synology). The secret here is NOT the shared storage – the secret is Indiestor Mimiq, which you install on the client AVID Media Composer computers (either Win or Mac). This will “fool” the NAS (any NAS) into thinking that it is attached to an AVID ISIS/AVID Nexis. You DO NOT need to create iSCSI volumes. In a NAS, you can create countless shared folders (Media, Projects, Graphics, Renders, Audio, etc.). These folders on a NAS will dynamically change in size, as you add media to them. The Indiestor Mimiq software will allow for FULL AVID BIN LOCKING, just like a real AVID ISIS. I use this software all the time, and it works great (and it’s cheap !!!). And it’s very easy to install on Win or OS X Machines.I will bet you anything that you can setup lots of users on the Filmlight Flux NAS system, and create a few shared folders – that is the very definition of a NAS (network attached storage). Once you do this (just like you would do on an AVID ISIS) – Indiestor Mimiq will take care of the rest for you.
