here is the reality of what will happen. You will learn AVID Media Composer. You will work very hard to find out who to contact, so you can work on a reality show. No matter how good you are, you will NEVER be hired as the main editor doing creative work when you get started. You will be an assistant. You will be logging media, ingesting media, transcoding media, exporting media for delivery, and doing whatever the editors that are currently working on the project want you to do. If you are good, in time, the editors who are on staff will move on, and as with most cheap companies today, if you have shown your ability to do all the tasks I mentioned above, you will get an opportunity to do creative editing. That opportunity usually shows up, because someone quits, you are willing to work cheap, and they already know you.
You have come from the advertising business. I dealt with the advertising business when I was in NY City. All my clients were either editors for agencies, or the agencies themselves. If you think that working on a TV show will be more creative, and less pressure, with people being “nicer” to you, you are in for a big surprise. There are many levels of a**hole producers in our industry, and if you are an editor, and have to answer to a producer (which you always do on a TV show), you will find that people are not so nice, and it’s no more “fun” than working in advertising.

ooh ! I know the answer to this question.
1) find the production company that is doing the reality show
2) ask the post production supervisor what they use to edit with
2A) – this is the most important part of my answer –
“no one will take my call, I can’t get the answer to this question – what software do they use” –THAT IS YOUR #1 problem. Who CARES if you are qualified, and an expert in knowing how to use FCP X, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, or AVID Media Composer. You can be an expert and NO ONE WILL CARE – because you can’t get anyone to TALK to you. You have only ONE job more important than learning AVID Media Composer. Learn how to GET SOMEONE on the phone, and FIND OUT THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION. So? What qualifications does this take. What course do you take at the University to find out HOW TO GET SOMEONE ON THE PHONE. This is the answer to your question. Go out to your local bar (I don’t care if you drink or not) – find the most attractive person there (I don’t care if it’s a girl or a guy) and say “hi – can I buy you a drink”. GET REJECTED. “Oh, I can’t do that” – then I don’t care if you are the worlds best expert in Media Composer – you will NEVER GET A JOB working on a reality show, editing (or being the assistant editor, or being the assistant to the assistant editor). Get some balls, make the call, FIND OUT no matter what it takes (including being arrested for stalking) and THEN you can learn whatever they say you need to know to work on the reality show.
THAT is 95 % of the battle. Do you know why ? Because if you become an expert in Media Composer (or Resolve, or FCP X or Premiere) and you DO get in as an assistant on this reality show, you will quickly realize (if you are in fact an expert) that almost EVERYONE that you are working with is basically incompetent. You will say to yourself “how the hell did these people ever get a job here – they don’t even know how to use Media Composer”. WELCOME to the world. Get some balls, and you will have no problem being employed full time at whatever you want to do with your life.

I love your jokes Scott. I was hoping to offend someone in this situation, but apparently, no takers this time.
What I observe, as FCP 7 fades into the sunset, as Apple changes their OS and hardware to something completely incompatible with “everyones” existing hardware, that the reality of “oh my God, all my gear is obsolete” is starting to face everyone, and perhaps because of the economy, people are more resistant than ever to re invest into their companies (except for new young people just getting into the business). It makes me realize (I guess I am blind) why clothing companies target young people – the old folks say “my shirt and pants are just fine – leave me alone”. Well, the same goes with the video gear, but the game has dramatically changed, and I see the strong resistance to this – more than ever. Companies like Blackmagic Design, and QNAP, have certainly rocked the boat, and that “boat” is starting to sink.Bob Zelin

Hi Berry –
you now understand that the comment from every LTO manufacturer that “LTO lasts for 30 years” is a BIG LIE.
You cant’ read DLT, you cant read AIT, you cant read LTO 1, 2, 3, and most people cant read LTO4. And soon you won’t be able to read LTO 5. LTO 8 just came out.Just like SCSI drives, IOMEGA disks, floppy disks, etc, etc, etc. for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, you need to migrate data to the next format (basically no more than every 5 – 6 years) or you are SCREWED. LTO 8 just came out. It’s late 2017. You know what LTO 8 will be in 2023 ? A JOKE !!!! No technology will exist in 2023 to read a thunderbolt 3 or miniSAS 6G LTO LTFS tape. WAKE UP. All this technology lasts 5 -6 years. End of story. Migrate your data, or you are screwed.
By the way, you don’t happen to have a Hi-8 VTR or Betamax VTR, do you ?

October 29, 2017 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Unable to Capture directly to QNAP with Black Magic Media Express or Resolve. It times out at exactly 2GB.Hi –
it’s not 2 GB – it’s 2.15 GB exactly. This was a classic problem with Adobe as well (at one time) where you could not record out to any network volume with Apple computers that was over 2.15 GB. This was well documented, and can still be found if you google search around (something like cannot record files greater than 2.15 GB with Adobe Premiere or Adobe After Effects). Apple was never going to do anything about it, but Adobe did – Adobe fixed this issue (I think back with CS 5.5 or CS6) and there is no issue with Adobe software to any network volume now (and your QNAP TS-1685 is a wonderful product). The fix was posted by Todd Kopriva, who is the product manager for professional video software at Adobe. And there never was an issue with FCP 6, FCP 7, FCP X or Media Composer either. At the time of the problem, I would simply install FCP 7 on people’s systems, and tell them not to use Blackmagic Media Express, and to capture with FCP 7.SO – Blackmagic never addressed this issue, and the only way to record to a network volume with Media Express over 2.15 GB is to a local drive connected to your Mac, and then transfer this (drag it) over to the QNAP. This is NOT a QNAP issue – this is a Media Express issue, that I guess, Blackmagic feels is too unimportant to address. Let me be very clear about this. If you had your Mac running Blackmagic Media Express, and used simple file sharing to mount another Mac with a USB or Thunderbolt drive to your Mac, so you could record your video (using Media Express) over the network (over a simple 1G Ethernet cable from Mac 1 to Mac 2) – this would FAIL at 2.15 GB (when using Media Express). When is this being “fixed”? If I were you, I would not hold my breath.
OOH – I found one of the old Adobe posts on this from Todd at Adobe (remember, this is old, and this issue has been fixed by Adobe) –

the ultimate editing machine did not edit Despacito. Isn’t Carlos Perez system the “ultimate edit machine” since he has the most watched music video in history ? This post for me is like seeing the “custom shop Gibson Guitars” for $25,000 each. Of which not one hit song was ever written on – ever. An ASUS motherboard with three NVidia 1080ti GPU’s and an Intel X550 10G port is more of “the ultimate edit machine” than any HP Z840.

Shane told you in the previous post – YOU NEED MORE RAM ? Get it – minimum of 16 gig of RAM !!!you are all excited about the computer to run Media Composer on. There are two things to remember –
you don’t want to edit with native XAVC – you need to transcode this. Do you know how to do this ?
Do you know what AMA is ?
And you must address your storage. Have you looked at the prices of thunderbolt 2 or thunderbolt 3 RAID arrays that are at least 64 Terabytes ?Bob Zelin
