There are many solutions, including Apple XServe RAID, Medea, HUGE Systems, Rorke Data, Studio Network Solutions, StorCase, and homebrew solutions from Granite Digital and so many others including 8 drive SATA solutions.

But for UNCOMPRESSED HD (not dual link) – ya can’t beat the HUGE U320-RX for price/performance. What a great product. And HUGE support is similar to AJA – great !

Sorry Gary, but incorrect. You can have a 1000′ RS422 cable – it ain’t gonna affect the accuracy of the edit. This ain’t no analog video signal that has a high frequency rolloff. This is a nice boring RS422 serial protocol, that is BALANCED – the very idea that edit accuracy is proportional to the length of cable is pretty rediculous. As far as “other hardware related items” – I would like to assume that he is using the AJA RS422 port (since he is using the AJA product), but even if he is using the Keyspan USA-28x (and I am not saying that he is – I am just humoring your comment) – it would have no different effect (as far as edit accuracy). It’s all software, my friend, and writing the correct communication protocol to the VTR.

as of this moment, there are no PCIe SATA cards. I am sure that they are all coming, but the ONLY storage card for MAC’s that is PCIe is the Apple FC Card for PCIe buss.
As you stated, the UL5D is COMING OUT – but you know that it will take time. Same for Sonnet, Firmtek, Highpoint, Initio, and all the others. Believe me, they want to stay in business, but Apple is not interested in helping it’s “business partners”
be ready for their new hardware. This applies to all MAC products in all industries, like the print and publishing business – so don’t think that its only Blackmagic customers that are being punished.

Gee – maybe Apple WANTS to sell more storage products (fat chance).

My advice – stick with your PCI-X hardware, and WAIT for the flood of PCIe products that will appear in the next few months. Don’t be the first kid on the block.

either product will. If it was my money, it would be the combo of the
AJA Kona 2 and AJA I/O (because you want to match the Adrenaline box, which has full composite and component video I/O with the ability to UP CONVERT the SD video to HD).

The Kona LHe will NOT allow for HD upconversion.

very popular German manufacturer Behringer has 0 VU to +4dBu which corresponds to -20 dBFS for Sony VTR’s.

based on this, an analog signal of +24dBu would show +20VU, or 0dBFS.

This is an international standard, used by manufacturers in Europe, the US, Germany and Japan.

I can’t imagine any manufacturer changing this standard, and I am surprised that this -9dbFS = =6dBu in Germany. I do work with Siemens in Germany , and have never heard of this.

There is no dilema here. I am currently bidding on multiple NEW FCP/AJA
jobs – and you know what – I am going to STILL SPECIFY THE OLD MAC G5 dual 2.7 with the AJA Kona 2/Kbox/I/O until I see what happens. I may be Mr. SATA these days, but I have STILL not tried SATA II drives. My clients have to make a living (and they have to be able to pay me), so I am not going to be the guinea pig – I will let some of you do that- and when I see that these new products work, then I will jump in.

Just remember boys, this “new” MAC G5 is an interim product – it will be outdated/replaced by the inevidable Intel Chip Set MAC’s that are coming out VERY SOON – so if you think that you are Mr. Smartiepants, and future proofing yourself by waiting to buy the new Quad – it will be outdated about a year later.

AND GUESS WHAT – it’s almost April 2006 – do you think that AJA won’t have new toys available for NAB2006? These guys are not sitting around doing nothing !!!!!

Now, go make a living, and stop worrying about “the next product”.

Steve is correct – and if you dont’ want to extend the audio/video lines, get a Gefen CAT 5 5000 HD, and use 4 CAT 5 lines to extend the keyboard, mouse and monitors to the CPU that will live 3′ away from your I/O box (and VTR’s). You room will become
very quiet.

None Paul – prepare for financial agony. Becuase once you purchase your wonderful QUAD MAC G5, it will become outdated, just as all the PCIe cards come out, with the new Intel based MAC’s that everyone knows are coming. So your AJA, SCSI, SATA, Firewire and everything else that you are about to buy will become outdated again.

Perhaps someone can mix up a big bunch of Kool Aid for the entire editing community. Once we are gone, Steve Jobs will convince everyone that Firewire DV25 really is good enough quality, and that “they” never need to buy another card ever again. Then Mr. Jobs can go back to his original plan that he had back in the original Macintosh design – NO SLOTS, no third party hardware vendors, no professional partners. I am waiting for the big battle with Adobe to commmence sooner than later.
