the best way is 10 bit uncompressed HD, if you have a Kona 2. If you have a Kona LH, you can go in HDV analog HD native, but with the Kona 2, you can use the AJA HD10A to convert the analog HD into HD-SDI. If you have small storage, you can use the DVCProHD codec, and when you have to dump out to Beta, simply use your KBox analog component output.

you are crazy. You have Beta SP material, and you want to do a “build it yourself system” so you can save some money. SATA is VERY reliable, and you will hate the Highpoint card which offers RAID 5. Forget the RAID – get an AJA IO LA, or the Kona LH, get a Firmtek Seritek 2 port card that comes for free with the 2 bay SATA enclosure and get any 2 matching SATA drives that you mention above, stripe them at RAID 0, and do your job. You can do 10 bit uncompressed with no problems. And you can get larger 500 Gig drives, to give yourself a lot of storage. The whole damn thing will cost you about $1000, and if you get the Firmtek, there is no software to install.Bob Zelin

Thank God this card came out. With the Kona 3 out, I had no SATA card to use (and I don’t trust or like Highpoint). I will get one of these cards ASAP and let you know.

how long do you want to keep this thread going ? There is something VERY WRONG with your drive array. You are not going to get any miracle answers on this forum that will make it start working. Replace your bad drive, and once it rebuilds, if you don’t get dramatically better performance from AJA Kona System Test, start from scratch – use RAID ADMIN to delete the RAID, and let it rebuild from scratch, and then TEST IT AGAIN. If you ignore this warning, and just keep going at 80mb/sec performance with a loaded XServe RAID, you are doomed for near future failure.What more can I say.

Jeremy is correct. When you see us talk about using SATA drives, we are NOT talking about using a single internal SATA drive inside the MAC. To get 10 bit uncompressed to work with no dropped frames, you MUST have an excellent quality SATA host card (like Firmtek Seritek, Sonnet Tempo, or Highpoint) along with 2 excellent quality SATA drives from Seagate or Hitachi, that are stripped together at RAID 0 using something like Apple Disk Utility to do this. You can use AJA Kona System test to test your drive array – 2 SATA drives will give you 120mb/sec, which is more than enough to do 10 bit uncompressed video.
I don’t give a crap what your other “experts” have told you does and does not work. This is what you need to do. I would also like you to download the AJA Control Panel and UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE on your AJA I/O – it’s easy, you just open the control panel, and click on UPDATE.
And when you say “you are not even using the AJA I/O, and still get dropped frames” – what does this mean. 10 bit uncompressed comes from digitizing Beta or Digi Beta tapes (or Panasonic DVCPro, etc.) – you can’t do this via firewire – you have to use the AJA I/O or Kona product for this.

Going with option 2 and a Kona2 / IO combo, would I be able to have both monitors hooked up at the same time without having to switch cables to monitor when going back and forth (SD to HD)?

YES – your HD monitor will be fed by the Kona 2 and the IO will feed your Sony PVM monitor. AND you can have the Kona 2 K Box analog out feed the component inputs of your PVM monitor, so you can see the HD out on your DVI monitor and simultaneously see the downconverted SD signal right out of the Kona 2. Perfect !Also, as far as HD goes wih upconverting all my SD material via IO to Kona 2, I’d primarily be using HDV, while still having to potentially master to BetaSP and make VHS dubs (still!). Does it make sense to upconvert all for HDV or should I downcovert the HDV signal in FCP? I know this is a bunch of issues wrapped into one post so any advice you have is much appreciated.
REPLY – what a shame. The Kona LH will take the analog HD signal from the HDV VTR right into FCP. But the Kona LH WILL NOT UPCONVERT ! So if upconversion from Beta, VHS, etc. to HD is important, you have no choice other than to get the Kona 2 right now. My HDV client currently downconverts with the Sony HDV VTR to analog component, and uses the IO for his show – nothing gets mastered to HD – they just shoot in HDV, and downconvert. This does not mean that this is the right thing to do – it’s just what one person is doing, and this show is on the air.

you cannot just turn off journaling. you must reformat your drives as OS-X Entended – NOT OS-X Extended (Journaled). And YES, you will lose all your material, and YES, it’s a nightmare.
DO NOT PROCEED WITH ANYTHING until you see over 200Mb/sec from your XServe RAID as viewed by AJA Kona System Test. You should get dramatically better performance than 200mb/sec with 14 drives (over 300mb/sec, but I forgot the exact numbers). You said something like “should I get a new drive from Apple” – I don’t know what you are refering to, but ONE DRIVE will not resolve anything for you. You have a RAID issue that MUST BE RESOLVED before you proceed. NEVER EVER speak to the Apple support person you mentioned earlier. He is an idiot, and has no idea of what he is talking about if he said your RAID was performing properly.
This thread is proof that a professional must configure a system. These things just dont’ turn on and start working. This ain’t an iMac.

I made a typing mistake in my last post – I said 708mb/sec (which is more than fast enough), when I meant to type 70mb/sec write speed (which is about what you said you were getting).
