Does anyone know if I can use my good old Sony UVW-1400 BetaSP machine? I need to buy mojo and YUV cable, sure, but what about the Rs232 interface (it’s NOT Rs422 as with the UVW-1800, it’s a different protocol).

You need an Addenda SCM/9M adaptor. Go to http://www.addenda.com.
Your good old UVW-1400 was never designed for ANY professional edit system by Sony, Media 100, FCP, or certainly AVID, or anyone else.
How does XPRESS PRO handle analog device control? Does it use the PC-systems legacy serial Rs-232ports, or some crude adapters? –

all AVID products use some “crude” adaptor – what the hell does “crude” adaptor mean anyway? AVID Adrenaline systems use Addenda RS 2/8 adaptors, and current MAC AVID’s use Keyspan USA-28X “crude adaptors” for deck control.
Nothing is native to the computer.
A really dumb question: I take it, I can digitize my YUV source via mojo in SD uncompressed, not just 25 Mbit-DV, right?
Sure – if you have a DRIVE ARRAY that is fast enough. Do you have 4 SCSI drives stripped across both busses of an ATTO card? Then you can do 1:1.
You ain’t doing 1:1 uncompressed HD on a firewire drive, or your internal hard drive.
