Audio Monitor output
Posted by Mark Tyson on February 23, 2006 at 5:23 amI’ve been using my i/o for two plus years, but I’m getting ready to move and re-configure. Is the audio level out of the D conector (Tascam I believe it’s called) a line level signal? I’d like to do away with my 20 year old audio DA and just take the output from the monitor to my analog Beta and VHS deck. Doabale?
TIA

February 23, 2006 at 4:27 pmWhat’s coming out of your analog outputs now (the onboard ones, not the D Connector ones)?

February 23, 2006 at 6:01 pmThat’s how I’m now feeding my DA…essentiall, I’m looking for more outputs without having to use a DA.

February 23, 2006 at 6:49 pmGet yourself an analog mixer and you’ll have a bunch of outputs, something like the Mackie 1202 or 1402. It’ll give you stereo XLR main outs, stereo 1/4″ TRS main outs, stereo RCA tape out, 1/4″ phones out, and stereo 1/4″ TRS control room outs.
The D connector will buy another set of XLR outs.
I’m sure Bob will come in later and tell you all of this again, but it’ll be a bit more forceful and probably a lot more logical.

February 23, 2006 at 9:05 pmI’m using a Tascam FW-1082 control surface (which is great) and the last thing I want is another analog audio board. I primarily take SDI (DVCPro50) in and out, but like everyone, I’m forced to do dubs to BetaSP and VHS. I’m just looking for a simple and flexible way to do this.
Thanks

February 23, 2006 at 9:13 pmAH! Now I get it, you are trying to take the audio out of the Tascam FW control surface? I thought you meant the D connector on the io.

February 23, 2006 at 9:49 pmNo, I do mean the i/o…I’m using the 1082 as a control surface, an analog input device and a monitor. I just want to feed audio from the i/o directly into the analog recorders.

February 23, 2006 at 10:35 pmFWIW, here is my setup:
IO ANALOG XLR IN/OUT –>BETASP (directly)
IO 25-PIN 8-CH ANALOG –>Mackie 1402-VLZ Pro –>RCA OUTS —> VHS DuplicationIf you need more than a direct connection to your Beta Deck, then get yourself a PATCH Panel.
The benefits of direct connection to you deck is, once you set your audio input levels from the IO, you’ll never have to mess with it again. -

February 23, 2006 at 10:52 pmI’m sorry this is taking so long, but I am really confused. You need 4 outputs or so and you have one. What do you think you need to give you more outputs? You need something unless you route to your VHS off of the monitor out or headphone jack of your beta deck. The D connector off of the io will give you ONE more set of XLRs with which to spread out to whatever device you want. You are going to need something besides your tascam (because it doesn’t look like that has many outputs). How about a DA? Just kidding.

February 24, 2006 at 12:11 amYou want to feed a Beta VTR and a VHS VCR. The input to the Beta VTR is +4dBu and the input to the VHS VCR is -10dBu. How the HELL are you going to feed the output of the AJA I/O directly into both of these VTR’s without getting distortion at least on your VHS VCR that wants to see an input signal that is 14dB lower than the standard output of the AJA I/O. There ain’t no knobs on the AJA I/O (or the AVID Adrenaline, or anything else).
Some digital audio boards (like the Yamaha series) are actually AUDIO BOARDS that can amplify and attenuate (and route) signals. Your control surface cannot do this. You have received wise advise from this forum. I suggest that you use this advice.

February 24, 2006 at 2:50 amWell of course one has to pad the input to VHS…what the hell else would you do. The only question is what is the output level of the monitor output of the i/o. Guess I’ll call tech support if the answer isn’t available here. i don’t really require a lesson in room configuration…kinda got the basics when I did my first 1″ room.
