Kona LHe and SD Connect Problem
Posted by Yan Naing on February 24, 2006 at 2:02 pmHi …
I’m quite new in Kona LHe and i’m fixing up new editing suite. My spec is ..– Quad 2.5Ghz Power PC G5
– Memory 4GB
– Kona LHe
– SD ConnectHere’s my problem with Kona LHe and SD Connect.
1- I can’t control my Beta Deck with RS 422. My setup is … RS422 control from Kona LHe goes to SD Coneect PC port and Controtl Beta Deck from there.
2- I can’t control my Sony DSR-11 Deck from Kona LHe. I already setup in SD Connect as (422 to 1394). But it doesn’t work. (same setup as above)
Can anyone solve my problem?

February 24, 2006 at 2:35 pm1) Why do you need to connect the RS422 from Kona LHe to the SD Connect and then to Beta VTR ? Why can’t you go directly from the Kona LHe to the Beta VTR ?
2) Why don’t you just use the Firewire on the G5 to control the DSR-11 ?
Going one big round is going to introduce unnecessary problem.

February 24, 2006 at 10:48 pmCrispy is absolutely correct. Why is the SD Connect in line with your other equipment? Even if you have a good reason to use the SD Connect – for now REMOVE IT FROM YOUR SYSTEM until everything is working correctly. If you have problems, post questions again. If it works directly thru the LHe, but not with the SD Connect – guess what – you have issues with the SD Connect.

February 25, 2006 at 3:14 amHi … Crispy and Bob .. thx for the reply
1) I can’t got direct to beta coz all the deck was in control room and my edit suite is quite far away from the contril room. The RS422 from Kona LHe can’t reach to the deck. But hope the problem can be solve coz SD Connect said i need null modem adapter.
2) I don’t want to used firewire coz when i capture from DV Deck i want 8bit uncompressed format from the Kona LHE and SD coneect is support 8bit uncompressed fro firewire. (I don’t want to render back again).

February 25, 2006 at 3:17 pmThis is an unacceptable answer. You MUST REMOVE THE Beta VTR from the control room to test the system. Bring the Beta VTR right next to your MAC to do these tests. We have NO IDEA if you have cabling issues, and cannot determine if there are other things going on. It is typical in EVERY STUDIO, as you expand, to have to RUN NEW, LONGER CABLES. Everyone goes thru this, everyone does this.
Right now, disconnect your Beta machine, bring it next your MAC, and do
these tests without the SD Connect. Then report back your results.Bob Zelin

You can avoid alot of technical grievance by keeping things simple. If you have a control room, I’m sure you have a remote patch bay so why don’t you just run a long 9pin extension for the Kona LHe ? As for this null modem adapter suggestion, you’ll have to test it out for yourself to see if it works for you.
And as for the DSR11, I’m just suggesting you to use Firewire for control, not capturing via Firewire. You can feed composite to the Kona LHe for uncompressed capture but use Firewire for remote control instead. I’ve actually done a test where I modified a DV capture preset and instead of capturing to the DV codec, I specified it as 10bit uncompressed because I needed to match those captured from DV source to those from DigiBeta and it seems to work. I’ve only tested on short duration clips though.
