You purchase a small QNAP, like the TVS-873e ($1299) that requires an optional 10G card, or your purchase a QNAP that already has a 10G card in it, like the TVS-1282T, or TS-1685. You plug the 10G port into the new QNAP
QSW-1208-8C switch ($589 retail – also brand new product as of NAB). This is an 8 port 10G switch. (12 SFP+, and 8 10Gbase-T for copper RJ45 Cat 6 cables).The Solo 10G is a brand new product for Sonnet. It is not on the Sonnet website yet. It was at NAB, and I used one for demonstration with a QNAP at the Maxx Digital booth. QNAP also had one of these at their booth. IT’s $199 retail.
It’s buss powered, thunderbolt 3 only (not backwards compatible to thunderbolt 2), and has a single 10G port for connection to a 10G switch. Read/Write Speeds on the TVS-873e were about 600 WRITE, and 1000 READ.
On the QNAP TVS-882ST3, we got 900 WRITE and 1000 READ, using the same MacBook Pro, same Sonnet Solo 10G and same QNAP QSW-1208-8C switch.When new products are just released, you need to wait a few weeks to see them on the usual Amazon, B&H websites.

running a Cat 6 cable is much cheaper than running a long thunderbolt optical cable. And there are no thunderbolt 3 optical cables. The longest cable you can run for Thunderbolt 3 is only 2 meters. With Cat 6, you can run 55 meters, and with Cat 6A you can run 100 meters.
The new Sonnet Solo 10G is $199 US, and you will get 900 – 1000 MB/sec Write/Read speeds without issue.

Its BRAND NEW. The Sonnet Solo 10G, the Sonnet eGPU, the Sonnet 10G PCIe card, the QNAP 10G PCIe card, the QNAP switch, are all brand new products, that were just shown a couple of days ago. They will all appear on
the web sites very soon. At least, they are coming out now, and not 1 year from now.Bob

I had all Samsung 1TB SSD’s in the TVS-882ST3, connected with the iMac and Sonnet Solo 10G and new QNAP 10G switch. It was tiny, and fast – 1000 MB/sec R/W on the client, on this tiny box, and multiple people could connect at that speed.Bob

I used it at the Maxx Digital booth at NAB. It’s great. Retail price is $589.
Its unmanaged. This means no ability for link aggregation. But for a simple small network, it’s
4 SFP+ ports, and 8 “shared” SFP+ and RJ45 ports. For those that don’t want to use a Twinax cable or any
SFP+ fiber stuff, it’s just an 8 port 10G switch. It does Jumbo frames.
Using the new Sonnet Solo 10G for Thunderbolt 3, I got 900 MB/sec Write and 1000 MB/sec READ thru this switch, and a thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro to a QNAP TVS-882ST3
The Sonnet Solo 10G is $199. It is NOT backwards to thunderbolt 2.Bob Zelin

I am not sure if Ben is looking for an Interplay type system, or just the ability to use Media Composer on a generic shared storage system. If it’s the latter (use Media Composer systems with a cheap NAS box) – I can assure you that

get your own NAS and keep it at your house. Then you don’t worry if DropBox, Google Drive, etc. will steal your data.
IF someone has an admin and and password to get into your NAS that is on the web, then they can steal the data – encrypted or not. Just like I can steal your money into my account, if you give me your name and password to your on line banking account.Bob Zelin

you want shared storage, but you want no complexity. Exactly what does this mean – you want a plug and play solution that will not require you to pay someone’s labor to set this up for you ?
QNAP TVS-873e – $1300

eight 10TB SATA drives – $2400
QNAP 10G switch – $589
plug in your computers to the switch at 1G – you get 100 MB/sec
get the new Sonnet Solo 10G – you get 800 MB/sec. The Solo 10G is $199 for thunderbolt 3 computers.
If you have 4 Win PC’s, the 10G cards are $99 each.and yes, this can be configured for WiFi access as well, with limited bandwidth, as well as remote internet access.
oh, someone has to set this up for you.

sometimes I get SO ANGRY reading comments from Steve Connor and Bill Davis (even though they are nice guys).
It seems that NO MATTER WHAT Apple does – it’s ok – it’s all Apple, just go along with it. When you come from “our background” (you know, Mac Pro’s that you can install anything you want, and are still running to this day in 2018) – we get upset when Apple says “no more buddy – give us more money”.Does Apple own AMD ? No. Didn’t they used to work with Nvidia wonderfully ? YES. Didn’t most of this list own
Quadro 4000 and GTX-680 cards ? YES. But then some BUSINESS PERSON at Apple said NO MORE. Why don’t you get angry about this.Apple has had a recent announcement that they will use their own chips in 2020 instead of Intel (based on Cow article and Bloomberg). You DO know, that unless Apple is planning on buying Intel, there will be no more Thunderbolt on those machines. What about your Thunderbolt investment – just throw that out ? Just say “ok, thanks Apple, here is my money all over again”. Why do YOU keep saying “it’s ok” every time Apple does something like this. It’s not the engineers that are punishing people – Apple Engineering is great. It’s the Apple business model that makes people angry – but there are “those users” that just keep saying “oh – stop complaining – it’s ok, Apple is just great”. So Apple is becoming just like those “nursing home” facilities that drain every penny out of grandma’s life savings every year – “but they take care of her so well – so what if they charge $80,000 a year”.
I just don’t know why you don’t get upset with all of this.
