Hi Melany –
you said “I went with 3 quotes”. Your quotes mean nothing. If you don’t get SOMEONE to help you, nothing will work.
IF you buy LumaForge – then LumaForge will help you. If you buy EditShare, EditShare will help you. If you buy Studio Network Solutions, then Studio Network Solutions will help you.

But you can’t do a “quote” from the B&H Photo website, buy a Studio Network Solutions system, and then call SNS and say “hi, I just bought this from B&H – can you help me” – no one is going to help you. You buy from Studio Network Sotluions (for example), and get a support contract, and they will help you. That’s the way it works.

With a product like QNAP or Synology, you hire someone like me.

Companies like LumaForge are wonderful – and they will help you, because you are paying them as part of the purchase for the installation. These types of purchases do not happen from a “quote” from a mail order on line company.

I do not understand your question. I don’t care if you get a Lumaforge Jellyfish (a GREAT product), the QNAP, a Synology, an EditShare, a ProMax, an Apace, a Terrablock, an AVID Nexis, a SNS EVO.

You have 4 – 5 editors, you MUST have a 10G network switch to connect all these users to your shared storage system. With a 1G Ethernet connection, you will get 100 MB/sec per client. With a 10G adaptor, you will get dramatically faster performance. You will not have success with thunderbolt connections – and you certainly cannot get 5 people hooked up to a system via Thunderbolt. Use the 10G network interface, and you will have no issues.

Please remember that systems from QNAP, Synology, Netgear are not “plug and play” like a G-Tech G-Rack or Promise Pegasus. Someone like me must set this up for you, unless you are familiar with configuring shared storage systems. When you buy a Lumaforge Jellyfish or Studio Network Solutions EVO (for example), these more expensive products come with EXCELLENT tech support, and they help you with the setup, because you have paid extra for it (that’s why they are more expensive). If you think you will buy the QNAP, plug in the computers to the switch, and it will just work – well, you are fooling yourself. Someone must assist you with the setup that is familiar with this product.

We’re trying to decide between the Qnap TS-1685-D1521 and the Qnap TVS-1282T3 32GB. We lean toward the TS-1685 because we don’t care about the thunderbolt 3 (short cable runs aren’t really an option for us) and like the idea of the larger capacity. We are noticing there is a processor option with TS-1685, either the D1521 or the D1531. We like the lower price point of the D1521, but don’t want to be short sighted. What would be the advantages of the processor upgrade to the D1531 for a situation like ours?

REPLY – get the TS-1685-D1521, which is the cheaper model, that you can get with 16 Gig of RAM for under $3000.
It’s great, and for the same money, you get greater storage capability. In addition, in the future, when you decide to add expander chassis (you can have 4 on the TS-1685), you will use a 12G miniSAS connection, which is much faster than the TX-800P for the TVS-1282T3. You can get the slower processor because you are using this for storage, not for render or processing power. If you were to put in a GPU card in the TS-1685 and create a VM Ware virtual machine, and run a virtual station of After Effects for rendering, then the faster processor would matter – but no one does this (it’s cheaper and easier to simply get a Sonnet eGPU box and a AMD Vega 64) – so get the cheaper QNAP, and you will be fine.

We’ll populate the NAS with 12x HGST 4TB (NAS). Anyone have any issues with this combo?

REPLY – I would buy bigger drives. 40 TB of storage is not much storage these days for working in 4K and 6K.

When we upgrade our internal network to 10G, we’ve got a couple of questions about options:
Qnap 10GigE switch vs. NETGEAR XS708T – we realize one is managed and one’s not. In our case, would the smart managed switch be beneficial to us? Again, don’t want to be short sighted in picking price over performance.

REPLY – The performance of the QNAP QSW-1208-8C is identical to the XS708T. For $589, you cannot beat this value. With that said, an installer like me likes the XS708T because it’s a managed switch, and if you are having connection problems, I can remote in, over the internet to see what the problems are. You can’t do that with an unmanaged switch. But as far as speed and performance, the QSW-1208-8C is a great product.

Regarding 10G network adaptors, we have a mix of thunderbolt 2 and thunderbolt 3 machines. I know there are adaptors from Sonnet, Akitio etc. I’ve heard that Akitio adapters have been problematic, any changes since NAB on that? I also saw the announcement for the Sonnet Solo 10G adapter. Will these work on thunderbolt 2 and 3 or will a T2 to T3 adapter work if they are only T3 compatible? News on availability

REPLY – are the Akitio adaptors better now ? I don’t know. the Promise SanLink2 and the Sonnet Twin 10G for thunderbolt 2 are both great. The new Sonnet Solo 10G (for Thunderbolt 3 only) is only $199, making it the cheapest adaptor on the market. I was getting between 900 – 1000 MB/sec write and 1000 MB/sec READ at NAB with this adaptor, on a QNAP TVS-882ST3 and the QSW-1208 switch. The sonnet Solo 10 will be released May 1st of this year. The Solo 10 WILL NOT work on a thunderbolt 2 adaptor, as it requires more power than a thunderbolt 2 port can supply (and it’s buss powered).

yes, I showed the QNAP TVS-882ST3 working with an iMac and the Sonnet Solo 10G at NAB. We got about 1000 MB/sec WRITE and READ. And it requires no driver installation, if you are running 10.13.3 or higher.

And Melany, I can help you with the QNAP, and you will save a lot of $$$ .

Hi Chris –
I have no idea of why you added to a post that started in 2014, and ended in 2016. You should have started a new post for this.

1) . You own a SNS EVO. Why don’t you call SNS for support ?
2) you upgraded to High Sierra. You need to turn off SMB signing on the Macs, and you need to reinstall the
SanLink2 drivers, which you will not be able to do unless you turn off Apple System Integrity Protection, which will block you from installing the Promise drivers (the simple “click Allow” in Security and Privacy no longer works.

to be clear Lucy, you said that you need TWO towers, each 90 TB.
A 10 TB drive is about $300 (it’s a little more – like $308) –

so if you need 2 x 90 TB – that is 180 TB. This means 18 drives.
18 x 300 = $5400 and that does not include the RAID enclosures or NAS enclosures.

QNAP TS-1685. $2800 complete with 10G ports

12 HGST 10 TB drives – about $300 each – so thats 12 x 300 = $3600

that will give you 120 TB of storage (yes, it’s expandable) and about 100 TB after RAID 6

you did not say how many client computers want to share this – the new QNAP 8 port switch is $589.

SO – $2800 + $3600 + $589 = $6989
that is $10,000 cheaper than your cheapest quote so far
