relatively cheaper options for 90 tb storage systems
Hi Everyone!
I’m looking to order two NAS towers (one master, one clone) for an upcoming documentary project my company is working on. We’re shooting 300 hrs of Prores 444 footage captured on Arri 3.2k, which according to my calculations means we need 90TB per tower. Problem is, our producer told me our budget is $7500 and the towers I’ve found so far have been upwards of $17000. Does anyone here know of any mac ready towers in our price range? -

QNAP TS-1685. $2800 complete with 10G ports
12 HGST 10 TB drives – about $300 each – so thats 12 x 300 = $3600
that will give you 120 TB of storage (yes, it’s expandable) and about 100 TB after RAID 6
you did not say how many client computers want to share this – the new QNAP 8 port switch is $589.
SO – $2800 + $3600 + $589 = $6989
that is $10,000 cheaper than your cheapest quote so farBob Zelin

to be clear Lucy, you said that you need TWO towers, each 90 TB.
A 10 TB drive is about $300 (it’s a little more – like $308) –so if you need 2 x 90 TB – that is 180 TB. This means 18 drives.

300 hrs of Arri 3.2k ProRes4444 amounts to 90TB like you’ve mentioned.
So won’t you need storage that’s more than that?
100TB as Bob has worked out, would be pretty close to full with 300 hrs of Arri ProRes444.
If the shoot exceeds 300 hrs, say 340 hrs, then even 100 TB won’t be sufficient.If cost is a consideration, in place of a clone, you could consider an LTO-7 drive for longer term backup. And, tapes.
