I have a client in Boston with an EVA1
they used to only use Adobe Premiere, but when they bought this camera, they always had stuttering issues with the EVA1 footage. They tried Resolve, and everything played back perfectly (QNAP system). Sorry everyone – they never tried FCP X. Anyway, they are one of my only ALL Davinci Resolve clients now, and this happened only because of the Panasonic EVA1.Bob Zelin

I did nothing but build Mac Servers from 2008 on. But in December 2017, Apple came out with macOS 10.13 High Sierra, and the server software, and normal file sharing – which worked great until this release, no longer worked.
You don’t need an M.2 card for the boot drive in the 5,1. You need any crappy Toshiba 1TB SATA drive for 60 bucks. A fast card is not doing to do anything for you. On this drive you load any macOS except for 10.13.x (anything thru Sierra 10.12.6 Server) and everything will work.Four SATA drives is NOT fast enough for a shared storage system for 4 client computers. You need a minimum of eight 7200 RPM drives (even 4TB SATA drives) all in a RAID configuration. But the parts add up quickly.
To build a Mac Server with your 5,1 Mac Pro, you need the boot drive running macOS 10.12.6 server or earlier. You need a disk drive host adaptor card (like an Areca ARC-1883x) to run the RAID. You need an 8 bay RAID enclosure with a 12G miniSAS port on it, that connects to the disk drive host adaptor. Inside the 8 bay RAID enclosure you put your eight 4TB 7200 RPM SATA drives. You create the RAID.
But we are not done. The secret to any of these systems (which applies to modern NAS systems) is the 10G card.
So in your 5,1 Mac Pro, in addition to your RAID host adaptor (from Areca, ATTO, or Highpoint – because they are the only ones that make RAID hosts with Mac drivers) – you need a 10G card. This 10G card can be from companies like ATTO (the NT11) or Sonnet (the Presto 10G). This card connects with a Cat 6 cable to a 10G switch – like a QNAP QSW-1208-8C or Netgear XS708T. Each of your four workstations connect to this switch. You will now have enough bandwidth to have all four client computers edit with Adobe Premiere, FCP X or Davinci Resolve. (not AVID – for AVID, you still need to purchase Indiestor Mimiq).Now with a single 1G connection from each computer, you will get up to 100 MB/sec – enough for 720p and 1080i HD editing. But if you want to edit 4K and above, you need to purchase 10G cards or thunderbolt to 10G adaptors for each of your computers. That will increase your bandwidth to over 600 MB/sec per client, so you can easily edit 4K and above.
Of course, all of these parts are expensive, and you are on a tiny budget. If you have NO money, you should get a cheap QNAP TVS-873e (about $1250), load it up with 8 4TB SATA drives (just like you would do for the Mac server system), install a QNAP QXG-10G1T 10G card in the QNAP (under $100) and add a QNAP switch – the QXG-1208-8C which is under $600. This is the cheapest way to get shared storage that will actually work for the 4 users.
Remember, if you want to do 4K and above editing, you still need the 10G cards, or thunderbolt to 10G adaptors from each computer to the switch.Please let me know if you have any further questions.

if you want GREAT speeds for your 3,1 Mac Pro running 10.12.6, you could simply get this –

Well, now you have a card that will only do 300 MB/sec instead of 900 MB/sec, you have no support from Sonnet, no support from me, AND you had to modify the driver (which no one else would be willing to do) and its STILL not working properly.
So you tell me – was this worth the $165 savings, when you could have simply purchased the proper card (the Sonnet Presto 10Gbase-T) and had ZERO aggravation, and a working product ?
And Nick – please tell me, with the “poor support” – all the support and emails I have given you – exactly how much money have you given me ? – oh , I know – ZERO dollars. I guess that’s too much.

Hi Nick –
the Solo 10G is specifically to be used with 10.3.3 or later. Same applies to the Solo PCIe card. If you have “hacked” this to work with 10.12.6, that’s your decision. I have no idea, or no interest in building an unsupported hack for a driver.As for QNAP support, I AM YOUR QNAP SUPPORT. Exactly what are you unhappy with Nick – did you pay too much ?

it’s been reported by me personally. How quickly will anything be done ? I have no idea.
As for Apple and their immediate future with other apps like Adobe CC. Well – I have no one that I can directly report to. I have asked my contacts that DO have direct contact with Adobe, as to what is possibly going to happen. I have not heard anything yet. Of course, NO ONE can get direct answers about Apple (or that person at Apple will be fired).
my summary –
1) QNAP is great
2) LumaForge is great
3) Synology is great
4) NVidia is great
5) AMD GPU’s – uuuum – not so great (not yet, anyway)there is no question that FCP X is starting to catch on (and so is Davinci Resolve). I should post that on the FCP X forum. The company that appears to be sinking fast is AVID. Even in LA. But of course, that statement will anger anyone my age (because old guys LOVE AVID).

OH – I just have to jump back into this conversation.
Your kid in in High School. He wants to be a film maker, or do something in this business (perhaps editor or graphics). Here are your instructions –
instead of spending $39,000 for that first year in school –
1) buy him or her a nice loaded iMac – you don’t need to spend more than $3000 for it
2) have him or her take this course – https://www.xintwo.com/. The guy that teaches it, is an FCP X expert, and in his words –

XinTwo is designed to help both beginners and experienced editors to gain a deeper understanding of Final Cut Pro X. We guarantee you’ll become more proficient with the app.”3) get them an Adobe subscription as well (even if you can’t get the student rate, it’s $49 a month)
4) get them a cheap car, so they can practice during the day, and go have some fun on weekends.
5) by the time they are 20, send them out for LA, and pay their rent for a year, so they can get an internship with their knowledge of FCP X and Adobe (and perhaps any other subject they are interested like Pro Tools, AVID, etc.).
and if they are interested in shooting – get them a Canon 5D or Red Raven – because $15,000 is cheaper than $39,000 for that first year of film school.And GUESS WHAT – after the first year, they will not only know than 75% of the people they are working with (they DID take the XinTwo course) – they will JUMP ahead, and they will be an in demand person that (because they are only 21 or 22 years old now) – they will be willing to work for much cheaper than a 40 year old with 15 years experience and a new baby at home. And THEY WILL SUCCEED. I am a huge fan of direct learning courses like Bill (and others) offer. All substance, no “bull#$%^”, at a fraction of the cost, in a fraction of the time.
Just my opinion. And I only said positive things about Bill Davis in this post – and it’s all true.

So, from what I recall, Ron Howard worked for free in order that he would be given the opportunity to direct a real movie. Once again – you bust your ass, you make sacrifices, and you get what you want. The ONLY thing that every one of you (that does hiring) cares about is WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE – not “what is your GPA”.

nMP is new Mac Pro, which is the 2013 Cylinder Mac Pro.
I would never buy that in 2018. Get a new iMac (or get a Win 10 PC with an NVidia GTX-1080ti card).
Those AMD D700 cards in the nMP’s all develop problems. It was a terrible design.Bob Zelin
