I am not referring to your wife’s hard work and teaching foreign students. I am referring to things like “film school”
based on my experience of seeing kids whose parents spend more than most of us own equipment – and then the kid comes out and knows nothing. Doesn’t that make you angry ? In my engineering school (now called NYU Engineering) – I learned a bunch of theoretical math classes, and had some Fortran programming classes. I did a lot of on-line editing, off-line editing, some sports television, and when I felt I had really got a grasp of Avid, I put my feelers out in the low budget film industry to see if anyone needed editors because I really wanted to work in film.”
You work hard – you get what you want. You keep at it, and you learn everything (like like FCP X).
This may not apply to being an actor or a musician, but it seems like EVERYTHING else in life – you keep pushing, and you can become whatever you want to be. With that said – my wife knows an editor in LA, that got laid off. He decided he wanted to become an actor. Not a “movie star” but just be employed in acting. Within a year, he has minor parts on countless TV shows now (most non speaking parts, and extra work) – but he is supporting himself, and while it may not be glamorous, he’s an actor.Bob Zelin

Oh My God – I love this video. (Isn’t this OT, and not relating to FCP X the debate).
I had a teacher at Polytechnic Institute of NY, who told me (as I was failing out in my class) – “Mr. Zelin, maybe you are not cut out to be an engineer”. That was 1976.

XSAN was Apples answer to AVID Unity at the time. At the time, many companies like Facilis and Studio Network Solutions were all using Fiber Channel. Products like XSAN required a metadata server, and management (just like AVID Unity did). But the world moved on. 10G became a reality, and it was inexpensive, and easy to use (translation – no reason for a support contract, no reason for a full time IT person to administrate the SAN, and easy for users – including new inexperienced users). Certainly XSAN, which is based on Quantum StorNext is still around. And there are other “big boys” with expensive fiber based SAN systems that are still around – like Nexsan.
The original ethernet based shared storage system was EditShare, which worked very well. Other companies started to adapt to this. This included AVID (with the AVID ISIS), Facilis, Studio Network Solutions, Small Tree, Promax, GB Labs, and well – everybody. The solutions that remained difficult (like XSAN, Accusys Exasan, and Symply) were either InfiniBand or Fiber based. They required StorNext licenses, and a complex setup. (Tiger Technologies offers SAN software for Accusys Exasan that is easier to deal with than StorNext or XSAN).
And as always – cheap and easy won out, and now “everyone” is using 10G or 1G connections on their systems. Certainly companies like Facilis and Studio Network Solutions STILL offer Fiber Channel solutions, but most people stick with 10G.Now if you are an XSAN administrator, and are very knowledgeable about XSAN, you may not like the fact that once one of these modern 10G systems is installed – there is not much reason for your staff position – unless there are lots of other things for you to do in your company. I see that the “hold outs” are guys who are IT directors, and choose XSAN type solutions, because they want to keep their jobs, and if they install an easy to use modern ethernet based solution, they might be unemployed (so they say – “oh that 10G stuff is a bunch of garbage”. But the reality is – 10G works great, and it works great from ALL the companies that you see discussed here on Creative Cow. Most people don’t want a complex system, that requires a staff person, or expensive support contract to keep it running. As it is, even for the systems that I recommend – like QNAP and LumaForge – it’s still to “complicated” for many people. The REAL desire is a plug and play solution (like a thunderbolt based Promise Pegasus RAID or G-Tech Studio XL RAID). Which of course, does not exist for shared storage.. So as I observe this, I realize that almost no one wants a fiber based system. Cheap and easy wins.
500 TB is nothing today, with the advent of 10TB and 12TB SATA drives. 5 – 8 users is nothing for modern 10G systems. All the companies I mentioned all work – they are all good. There is no reason to deploy XSAN or any StorNext environment in 2018 – certainly not for a small post production department.

It seems that Bill is SO EXCITED that Apple has 1 Trillion Dollars. Well I know how Apple can continue that trend.
Before I tell you, I must say that I AM OLD, and close to getting Medicare, so I really don’t give a damn anymore. I have done well in the professional video business, so I have nothing to complain about. I still use and integrate Apple computers every day for professional editors. So I am just whining now. My reply is strictly about Bill’s happiness about Apple’s financial success.One day Apple will “teach” every human being how to edit. EVERYONE will edit. And just like there is a small market for professional writers (and there will continue to be a small market for professional editors) – the VAST MAJORITY of what we do for a living will disappear. And Apple will make EVEN MORE MONEY (maybe 2 trillion dollars). And just like all those courses that you see (you too can learn how to use Microsoft Word !) – Bill will run a school that teaches every mom and every grandma how to edit their little show, so that (just like the demise of the printing business) – EVERYONE CAN DO IT. If you were to say “I am a printer” – you would sneer. And if you were to say ” I am a data entry person” – or “I am a word processor” – you would sneer. And this is EXACTLY what will happen one day soon. Do I care – no – I am old, I will be out of it before this happens, but for young people that are professional editors – well, they are screwed, and Bill Davis will say “SEE – I TOLD YOU SO”.
The exact same thing will ultimately happen to what I do for a living. It’s already happened. Video facilities are pretty much gone, except for the “factories” in LA. Everyone with a Canon 5D and an iMac is a production company.
And so, my last hold out – storage, and shared storage – with cheaper and cheaper companies (like QNAP and Synology) – ONE DAY – internet speeds to everyone’s home will be 10G speeds or faster. And this would have happened by now, if it wasn’t for the cable companies whose executives want that 50 million dollar a year bonus, instead of investing in fiber lines all over the place. Google has already proven that it can provide 800 Mb/sec connections to everyone’s home in countless cities for very little money (relatively speaking) – but that’s STILL too much money for the Comcasts, Spectrums, Cox’s, AT&T’s of the world – because their execs want the BIG BUCKS, and if they can get it for a few years, screw the consumers. And so I stay employed. But that will change one day soon, and soon, EVEYRONE will have a 1G connection to your cloud site, and people willing to pay more will have a 10G connection to their cloud site, and you will be able to cut your 4K FCP X video right off Apple iCloud – so who needs a “facility” – when I can do EVERYTHING from my bed, and deliver to the world without leaving the house.I know it’s coming. the QM card uses the Tehuti 10G chip – that is a HUGE piece of garbage.
You now have excellent results. You will not get faster speeds that what you are seeing now.disabling SMB signing is critical, as you now see.

welcome to my nightmare. I have been doing OS X and macOS servers since 2008, and ever since the release of
macOS 10.13 and macOS 10.13 Server, NOTHING works anymore. You create a simple file and you will get a “dummy folder” or a gibberish temporary file, just as you have shown. Now, imagine a real world server with 10 – 15 clients, with hundreds of thousands, or millions of files – all with a duplicate “nonsense” file with
.sb-5a0b20c2-82JkkG after everything (and other random crap). This NEVER used to exist – from 10.5.8 to
10.12.6 (and server). But with the wonderful advent of macOS 10.13 and 10.13 Server, this is exactly what happens.This is why file sharing with macOS High Sierra is totally useless, and I can no longer update anyone’s Mac server. It’s over. I gave up. I switched to QNAP and Synology – that exhibits no problems.
There is no solution. If you don’t like it, call Apple. If you can even get a contact name for me to speak with, I will be happy to do all the talking – you don’t have to say one word.

I do not understand why you did not hire someone to assist you with this setup.Your system should have eight identical 7200 RPM drives, all created in a RAID 5 or RAID 6 static volume (not thick or thin). Turn off Auto Tier until this gets resolved. Why did you not order the QNAP RAM ? This makes no sense. YES – the incorrect RAM can cause dramatic issues with speeds. So can the drives. Exactly what drives are you using – I hope they are WD RED, WD Gold, HGST NAS or Seagate Ironwolf, and not some off brand or “green” drives.
You must have SMB signing turned off on your Mac computers. The Solo 10G should give you about 900 MB/sec
Read and Write performance. Please re state exactly what QNAP box you have. If you purchased the TS-831X or TS-832X, you will never get good speeds.And if you have the Promise SanLink3, you will never get Write speeds faster than what you are seeing right now.

Your response is well – shocking to me.
You are going to spend the money for a Quantum, when GB Labs – a fully established company in London (I assume you are in London, Rodrigo, and not the United States) – has proven that they can provide a wonderful shared storage environment for professional video users. Their support is right in London.Exactly what is Dell going to do for you. WHY are you not considering an ESTABLISHED company in the video industry, that knows exactly what it takes to make FCP X, Adobe Premiere, AVID and Davinci Resolve work. WHY are you considering a solution from Dell or Quantum, that know NOTHING about your industry, and the applications that we use to make our living. Are you making the decision here, or is there someone above you in IT that knows nothing about video, but it administrating a larger network that wants Quantum or Dell. This is a TERRIBLE decision. Of the three choices you have just given me, there is no question that GB Labs is the ONLY choice that you should consider. There are plenty of other companies that can provide a wonderful working solution for you, that I have mentioned in my previous post (I would be happy to retype those names). If someone making this decision (that does not include you) is not familiar with Maxon Cinema 4D, FCP X, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, AVID Media Composer, Davinci Resolve, Blackmagic Fusion – then this person should be FIRED, or killed – and I would be happy to “do the deed” and go to jail, as long as an IT manager that knows NOTHING about our industry is not involved in making a decision that has NO knowledge of our industry, and the applications that are required to run on these systems.
I am always fascinated by posts like this. Unfortunately, I have to deal with people like this on a regular basis.

what NAS did you purchase. I can only hope it’s from one of the established companies in the video business, like Facilis, EditShare, DDP, Promax, Archion, GB Labs, AVID, Studio Network Solutions, Apace, LumaForge, or a cheaper system from QNAP, Synology, Netgear, QSAN, Asustor. I hope it’s not NetApp, Isilon, Quantum or Dell – because you will be back in the same boat you are in now, with insane costs.
