there is no magic trick here. If the answer is “how can I have more and more storage, without spending any money” – there is no answer.
You either buy a giant RAID array, or you buy a large Network Attached Storage system.
Either way, you are going to spend thousands (not hundreds) for a solution like this –
I don’t care if it’s from G-Tech, Lacie, Promise, OWC, QNAP, Synology or anyone else. You need
a minimum of eight large SATA drives, and you need a RAID enclosure a NAS enclosure.Bob Zelin

the cloud is not fast enough. Your 20Mb/sec upload speed is not fast enough. You will be spending money on more and more storage for the rest of your life – not until Apple or Google or Amazon buys the cable companies.

But when I connect to my server on the desktop and look through finder I get a weird folder name of “LUXE9C~X” that is empty. (screenshots attached)
this is a guess – but I bet this is what has happened.
you see all the files in File Station, but when you mount it on your desktop, you get an empty folder with a weird name like LUXE9C~X – correct ?You originally created that folder while connecting the QNAP via AFP.
So you went GO> Connect TO Server> afp://192.168.2.3 (or whatever IP).You put your stuff in there, and everything worked.
NOW – all those files are gone ! – I bet you are clicking on
GO> Connect To Server> smb://192.168.2.3or perhaps another editor was working with you, and worked in AFP, and you are working in SMB.
SO – if you are working in SMB, and want to keep working in SMB –
On DataVol2, create a new Shared Folder
Shared Folders> Create> name will be Dominick (it doesn’t matter what the name is). Make sure that this folder is in DataVol2.Mount the Dominick Folder as SMB
smb://192.168.2.3
Connect, and select your new folder – it appears on your desktop, and it’s empty right ?NOW – go back into File Station on the QNAP, and find your “corrupt” folder where you can see all your files, and drag them into the new Dominick Folder in File Station. When you highlight the first file, you will have many choices as you drag – so click on MOVE AND SKIP (do NOT copy, or this will take forever) – you can try one little folder or file, just as a test, if you are nervous.
OK – it moved in File Station, and now you can see that stuff in the Dominick folder – right ?
Go to your desktop – I bet your files are now in that folder.

Which RAID config should I use? RAID 6? Will this be fast enough? I’ve read that RAID 5 is not as recommended anymore, particularly for larger files and disks.
REPLY – yes. RAID 6. You will lose the equivalent of 2 drives of storage for RAID 6.
Raid 5 you will lose the equivalent of 1 drive for storage.
Whoever said that this is wrong, especially for “larger files and disks” is an idiot.What would you recommend I do with the G RAIDs? Is there a good way to repurpose them? Should I just keep them as DAS for when projects are too big to run off the QNAP, or can I use them as extra storage?
REPLY – I have no idea. You can’t tie the G-Speeds to the QNAP. What do you mean G-Raids ?
You mean a G-Speed Shuttle XL ? These are great direct attached storage systems. They will NOT run off the QNAP as extra storage. Want to use them for backup – why not !I’m also thinking of syncing the QNAP to Backblaze for nightly backups and B2 storage for assets and completed projects, and I have access to an unlimited amount of Google Drive storage.
REPLY – you use QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync to sync the QNAP to Backblaze B2. Try it now, before you get too deep with 20 TB of data. You use the same program – Hybrid Backup Sync to sync to Google Drive. You are always at the mercy of your internet upload speed, no matter what service you work with.

Hi –
this article is misleading. The QNAP QSW-1208-8C is not a managed switched. It cannot support IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation (LACP) which is what is required for you to get 20 Gb/sec instead of 10Gb/sec for greater performance from your QNAP system. QNAP offers 3 types of LAG’s in the trunking menu in Network and Virtual Switch menu, and the only one that will give you increased performance is LACP, which is the bottom selection. If this is chosen, the only way it works, if is the 10G switch can also support IEEE 802.3ad LACP, which the QNAP QSW-1208-8C cannot.While you will be fine with the single connection, because you only have 3 10G workstations, and don’t need the added bandwidth, if you DID want to make this work, one of the cheapest switches you could have purchased would be the Netgear XS708T ($620 on Amazon). This switch is a managed switch, and does support Link Aggregation LACP. This is set in the Netgear menus, just like you would do in the QNAP menus.
Hopefully, this NAB 2020, QNAP will introduce an 8 port MANAGED switch that will support LACP for their own products. We will see.
SO – in summary – you just need the one line. Regular cheap Cat6 cable will work.

I guess this can’t be more unrelated (well, I could tell you what I had for lunch today) –
but this is what I went thru today. And it made me feel exactly like everyone else on this post, including Herb.
I was doing a new QNAP network attached storage system for a client today that is using Davinci Resolve, and Resolve uses the PostgresSQL 9.5.4 database (ok – think of the plug in that you HAVE TO HAVE to continue working – same thing here) –
And so to see this, you need to run a program called PGAdmin on your Mac or Windows computer so you can see the databases for Resolve –
This is the LATEST release for Windows for PGAdmin –

You will see that this is dated January 9th, 2020, but it’s for Windows 7. Now, these guys know a LOT more about computers than most of us know. Did anyone tell them that there is no more Windows 7 ? SO why do I care – because I need to run Davinci Resolve 16.1.2 with PostgreSQL 9.5.4This is the insanity of our business. I feel for Herb more than you know. You HAVE to use these plug ins, and well – the plug in companies just don’t keep up, and the “major manufacturers” just don’t care.
