Let me assure you that Accusys is in my “top 20 ” of NAB, and I will faint if this in not an internal C1M box inside the chassis to make it appear that it’s a Thunderbolt interface, when in fact it is a Thunderbolt to QSFP adaptor. Hey – I could be wrong, but this is a 4 user interface, and not the QSFP switch that Accusys currently offers – so there is more to the story than you (or Accusys) is leading to –
we will see – that’s why we go to the show. ]

How your IT Director allowed for such catastrophic drive failure without backup shows me that he is completely incompetent, and uninvolved with your department. He should be left out of all decisions from this moment on. Who is the idiot making this statement – me – Bob Zelin – have him look me up.I don’t know what you are going to do with $20,000. If you want ZFS, there are two main players – Small Tree Communications, and LumaForge. If you want a working system, there are countless people to choose from, including Studio Network Solutions, Facilis, Maxx Digital, EditShare, ProMax, Archion, Apace, AVID, and others that you will find, as you research the banner ads here on creative cow and the SAN networks forum. And Tiger Techologies can help you too. They are a wonderful company. Hopefully you have been using (or someone has been using ) CatDV and your Tolis BRU LTO backup system, so that you are not totally screwed, and that you have backups of your media – somewhere.
So I have just given you tons of companies to call who are reliable. The #1 piece of advice that I can give you is to STOP TAKING ANY ADVICE from your IT director, as he obviously has no clue as to what is going on. Call any of these companies (all who know BRU, CatDV, and shared storage for video), and you will get proper advice on your situation.

Nate’s company – ProMax is an excellent product that is easy to maintain, as is Studio Network Solutions, Facilis, Editshare, Maxx Digital, Small Tree, Accusys, Tiger Technology, etc. etc. What is NOT easy to maintain is Quantum, XSAN, Nexsan, Isilon, EMC, NetApp.
Those are products designed to keep IT managers employed.You have lots of options out there today.

this is my opinion.
RAID 0 is for manufacturers who want to show how fast their performance is, for magazine advertising.In real life, you are an irresponsible idiot if you would with RAID 0 – even if you have backups of your media. Because it takes TIME to restore your media if you have a drive failure, and if you have a RAID 0 array, the odds are that you will have a drive failure. If you think I am wrong, you should go to Las Vegas, and gamble your life savings, and become rich. If you have a drive failure, and lose your media, and tell your client ” oops – we will be back up soon, because I have a backup of all of this media on LTO tape” – that client will say “this guy is an idiot, and I am never working with him ever again”.
You client NEVER EVER wants to hear that you lost your media, and you do everything possible to make sure that the client sees that your system is working perfectly (even if you have TWO dead drives while he is sitting there). When the client says “what is that loud beeping noise” – you tell him that it’s time for him to order lunch – not that your drives just failed.

this is the process.
You buy the storage from Accusys, which is a nice, fast product.
The format is QSFP, not Thunderbolt. This goes into a QSFP switch which also connects your client computers. Accusys is making a thunderbolt to QSFP adaptor called the C1M. This will plug into your thunderbolt port, and connect on the other end (via QSFP cable) to your Accusys switch (the SW16). This is a fast excellent product, but this is not Thunderbolt storage, and this requires adaptors for all of your Thunderbolt computers.As you may be aware, there are Thunderbolt to Fiber and Thunderbolt to 10G adaptors on the market for other solutions as well.
Accusys is an excellent company with a very fast product, that is expandable.
Your post gives the impression that this is a Thunderbolt RAID array, that you plug your thunderbolt computers into. It is not.

Hi Annie,
I was just at a corporate facility in Sanford, FL. yesterday, who was in the exact same situation as you. They have 5 Mac clients that are doing editing, audio, graphics, and another print team all on Macs, and their IT department spent a LOT of money putting together a generic Dell Windows 2012 Server system with 1GbE connections (and a 1G switch), and they were getting about 4 MB/sec, and IT threw up their hands and walked away from the project, blaming the Macintosh computers.Here is what you need to ask.
1) what do we own ? EXACTLY – what server, what OS, what switch, what are the connections. Is it part of the house network (the place yesterday had their PoE phone system on the same network as their “shared storage”
2) are we willing to HIRE someone to help us resolve this ?Let me know. I will help you.

as you know, Sonnet does not make a native Thunderbolt array, but offers a thunderbolt to miniSAS adaptor so you can plug in their conventional miniSAS RAID array. Products like this are available from companies like Highpoint as well.
As for the native Thunderbolt arrays (Promise, Maxx Digital, G-Tech, Netstor) – the 8 bay performance is all pretty similar (900 MB/sec with RAID6). And of course the 16 bays get better performance (1100 MB/sec – maybe a little more). You only get close to 1300 MB/sec when you do RAID 0. I have unfortunately not tested out the Lacie that you have, but I have to assume the performance is similar (for the 8 bay).

Walter is correct, and has given you accurate information. There is one critically important fact to remember here – you are not going to do this by yourself. Contact one of the companies (or all the companies) that Walter mentioned, and you will have a working system, that will work wonderfully with Adobe Premiere and your computers. And to answer the question “but can’t I just put this together myself” – simple answer. NO.
