and also set my media disk cache and conformed disk cache to a folder that is also on the same Lacie external drive as my footage (is this a terrible idea?)
reply – Yes, this is a terrible idea. Never do this. Use an external drive, an external SSD, or even your boot drive, but DO NOT use your media drive as your “media cache” drive in preferences. It will slow down your system.
Right now whenever I boot up AE I’m told that “the disk cache is on a drive that does not have enough space” and a follow up message that “ray-tracing on the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later. For now, ray-tracing will use the CPU.” Can anyone explain what this means?
The Adobe CC software wants to see specific graphics cards to optimize the acceleration of the software – so it requires specific Open GL or Open CL graphics cards. You just don’t have one. And you are not going to have one on your laptop – it’s not like you can open up the side, and install the correct Nvidia card (and now AMD card).
My questions are:
1) Is this configuration likely to improve the performance of my applications so I can playback video/render faster and not face the “scratch disk full” error?REPLY – you need a large fast external drive array, to get optimum performance. If you have a thunderbolt port, there are countless thunderbolt drives on the market that can do exactly what you want.
2) Is it worthwhile to upgrade from the 1TB ATA drive to Apple’s new 1TB Fusiondrive? The sales rep at the store said he didn’t think it was worth it for me as the Fusiondrive was more important to laptop users, and I’ve read some things from other videographers reporting issues when editing video due to the way Fusion splits up your media in order to access it faster. Should I just stick with the 1TB ATA, or upgrade for $200?
REPLY – you do not need to change your boot drive. You can run Adobe CC on a 2008 antique Mac Pro. You need the correct drive arrays that are fast enough to work for your application.
3) I’m assuming I will not some type of external drive setup for storing my media and setting scratch disks. Do I set my scratch disks on the same external drive as my video files, or will I want to get a separate drive specifically for that? So I’d end up with applications installed on the desktop’s internal HD, media stored on my 1TB Lacie Thunderbolt and scratch disks set to…a second 1TB Lacie? Should I invest in something like this to store both my media and my cache on?
REPLY – your boot drive in your computer is for your software applications only. You can keep your project data on this drive if you like, and in a pinch, you can keep your media cache on this drive as well, but not your media. Your scratch disks with your video media is your external drive array. You media cache should NOT be the external media drive. It ideally should be a small SSD, but in a pinch, use your boot drive, as many people do.
Buying an external G-Tech 2 bay thunderbolt array is not a big investment. Don’t put your media cache on this external array.

both Ronnie Courtens (my current hero) and Sam Mestman (the most knowledgeable guy about FCP-X in the US) giving talks on PROFESSIONAL workflow.But aren’t these the two guys who represent the exact opposite of what Apple really wants – to allow any high school kid can do what we do ?

Of course, Andrew, you have answered my question, more than you know, which was my point.
You state “or with a camera” – unless you are Vincent LaForet, how many people can make a REAL living (you know, real money, not 35 grand a year) as a photographer today. With products from Canon and Nikon (and others) that even novices like me can use, to make amazing photos, why hire a professional photographer.
You state “a guitar” – I have recently learned how to play guitar, and am playing occational Sundays at some local bars – it’s fun, and we are ok, and you know what we get paid – ZERO. We do it for fun. Just like most bands, just like most PROFESSIONAL bands – who make very little money. We are not the Eagles. And as you probably are aware, it is very difficult for any musician to make a REAL living (kind of like photographers).
You state ” a fully functional kitchen” – we eat out all the time, and are friendly with many chefs, and sous chefs – the reality of this, is that unless you are a owner/partner, you are not making a lot of money – let me be clear, you are not making as much money as a senior video editor at a professional post production facility in LA, even if you are a executive chef at a big restaurant in LA – not unless you are the owner.
You state “an affordable hardware store” – once again, the manager at a Home Depot, or Lowes or Ace Hardware is not making the same money as a senior editor at a post production facility. If you are a senior editor, or a senior graphics artist at a company that is working on ad agency work, you are making A LOT more money than the guy who MANAGES the local Home Depot.
Unless you OWN YOUR BUSINESS – how much does any landscaper make ?
I bothered to write this boring post, because you mentioned one of my MAJOR clients in your post. They recently fired their senior editor, who was AMAZING (but made too much money) and replaced him with a younger guy who is not as good, but gets the job done, and charges half as much.
And that’s my point. Randy Ubilos article specifically stated the target audience that he wanted. The idea is to get EVERYONE to start doing this. It’s certainly right for Apple – it’s just intimidating for “us”. The reality that ANYONE can do what we do.
In the same way that major recordings, major feature films, major musical acts, major TV shows, major magazines, major photo shoots, will always continue, the vast majority of the work available for this will change dramatically. It has already for most of these industries – and because Creative Cow is about the video industry, I bothered to write this boring post. The day that you are happy that you can charge $100 for a full day of editing, with all of your hardware to produce a finished show, and be happy with that – well, I guess that day, I won’t bother to read these forums anymore.

$5649 each. So how much will this 16 TB SSD cost. And if we put that in a 16 bay array (sixteen 16TB SSD) – which will be super fast, and super big – how much will that cost. And who will be willing to pay that cost (except for OpenDrive’s customers).

my opinion is different.
1) don’t be shy.
2) call the owner. Ask him (her) – what should I bill you for. Put it in their court. Your ultimate job is not to “screw them over” now, because you worked hard on this – your ultimate job is to get every last penny you can out of these people. So seem like you are the most honest hard working person in the world. Get them to hire you again – so ask them “whatever you think is fair is ok with me”. And get them to hire you again. SHOW UP TO THEIR OFFICE – UNINVITED. Ask questions to their staff (if the boss is not in the office). Show them effort that none of their employees show. They will love you – you will “get in” – freelance (or staff which I never suggest). Once you are in, you can be a “big shot” and demand what you want – but right now, you are nobody – so kiss some behind, put the extra effort in, ask what THEY think is fair and just eat it. You will get in. And you can “screw them over” later with billings – because you want them to think that they can’t live without you. Right now, I assure you – they think that they can live without out you.Everyone lives their lives this way – “I can find another dentist, I can find another accountant, I can find another editor, I can find another producer, I can find another cameraman” – but once you are in, and they TRUST YOU – people go crazy “oh my God – I have to have THIS PERSON, because they are the only ones that can do this job”. This is the way that most people are about everyone (including personal relationships) – your only job in life is to GET IN – once you are in, you can control the shots. Advice from a guy – just lie.
We all do it.Don’t be a big shot – not yet.

the equipment I suggested is very inexpensive. I am sure that Cafeteria would have no issue buying this additional equipment to make things work correctly.
