I just tried the demo – it worked, BUT – it took 6 minutes for 1 GB. And only 9GB (approx) fit on a DV60. The software DOES span tapes. But a 100GB backup would be an all-day affair. On the other hand, it’s using tape drives we already own, and media is darn cheap. Anyone else?

Jesse points to what appears to be pretty decent tech – 1TB data tapes running at transfer speeds of 400GB/hr (from marketing I’ve read) seems to be pretty decent. Of course, the darn things cost $4-$5k. They better work A LOT BETTER than data tape drives I’ve used in the past! FYI, I just tried backing up a 55GB project onto my DLT4000, which to this point I’ve only used for DVD mastering…. it stalled after 25GB & 2 hours. Forget DLT.

Nope, we’re talking 8 & 10 bit UC files. And potentially, HD from the new Panny P2 camera. The one that records HD to flash cards, which are offloaded to HDD for field storage. After these are transferred to the editing system, the problem becomes “what to do with the source files”.

If there’s a relatively simple way to do it, tape is still MUCH cheaper (and more reliable, in some regards) than HDDs. I still feel I can count on mounting that 5 year old tape, while a 5 year old drive…….. (even if it has just been sitting on the shelf) But without the FCP clip metadata, it’s a moot point. It’s the information about the clip that’s useful, not the ins & outs.

We often propose a flat rate with x number of revisions (based upon the project), and then do change orders past that. We always emphasize repeatedly that the Script is the Word, and once the Script is approved, any alterations are considered revs. (Of course, exceptions are frequently made.) In your case I think this would still work… you give them the basic edit at the flat fee and use hourly rates past that for all revisions. Otherwise, you’d need to propose an insanely high fee to CYA.

Amen, brother! Give us that, and a way to save the proc settings. And as long as I’m wishin’ – how about being able to batch capture, and autoload proc settings! Whooooho!

How about a CD w/ a video of lighting setup tips for pros, with requisite focus on the product, naturally. Make it something people will WANT to watch, and give them USEFUL info, instead of just a sales blurb. Oh yeah, I’m available for your editing… (grin)
