I just want it clearly stated for the record that I said nothing about not paying the required taxes on this equipment.
Although technically, since we use this equipment for R&D we are not required to pay Mass state sales tax.

Just bought 3-EX1R’s from Rule Broadcast in Boston. The price was $6,299.00 which is the same at B&H and another camera dealer I quoted. Rule delivered them and set them up. There has to be a Sony dealer in your area which will do the same. You should always have a relationship with someone in your area for an important purchase such as this. I use B&H for almost everything else.

Another option would be to purchase a number of external hard drives (they are really cheap these days) or even flash drives and have each student keep all of their project materials on their own drive. If you are really paranoid (and you should be with students), you could have them back-up to a group storage system each day. You can get 1TB drives these days for less than $100.00. It is never to early to teach them the value of multiple back-ups.

Thanks for your feedback Michael. I will not be linking the cameras. They all shoot separate labs during the course of the day. Also, in the long run, the quality is really better than I need already without having to stretch it. Interestingly, I received the same quote, $6,299.00 from two different vendors and that is also what B&H has it for. I guess there is no messing with Sony (like Apple).

I am not sure why you would want to taint your pristine, board-fed audio with distorted ambient sound. I have never had success recording camera audio at a rock concert, especially when you are that that close to the PA. I think the audio on all of your videos is excellent. If you are looking for ways to spend money I would invest in an inexpensive camera support system. It would improve your hand-held picture quality and probably save your back and shoulder for a few more years of what appears to be great work.

Thanks guys. That is very helpful. I am evaluating the Panasonic 200’s versus the Sony Ex-1 and need to be able to make a case either way to my boss.

I just recently completed a P2 download into FCP7 on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I downloaded from the 170 camera. It worked fine. Are you having a FireStore problem or a P2 problem? Did you check with FireStore support for drivers?

Eric, (now that you have been brutally humbled) shooting with the 170 is not rocket science. I just borrowed one for a demo and was able to shoot, download, edit and output a beautiful video to H.264. I am using a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and FCP7. It took a little work for me to figure out exactly what settings I needed but it certainly can be done. I think if you read the manuals, play with the camera a bit and come here with specific questions you will find the people here very helpful. Also, the FCP forum on Apple.com is also very helpful. (I hope I can say that). I found the picture quality of the 170 to be exceptional. I am starting my EX-1 demo today.

October 30, 2009 at 1:00 pm in reply to: Why dose Final cut 7.0.1 crash all the time??? I need helpHi Mick,
I am running 7.0.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and I am not having problems with crashes. Did you update to 10.6.1? I would follow Jeremy’s advice and update all of your drivers. Some manufacturers have just recently updated their drivers for Snow Leopard. I was having trouble with my Sonnett Express 34 card until I updated the new drivers. Also, did you do all that Mac crap, i.e., Reset Permissions, zap PRAM? That is needed a great deal when installing new software and updates and such.
Let us know how you are doing with this. Good Luck.

Sorry to get in so late but…how long do you think hey worked on that guys make-up before they completely gave up? And was Mr. T there the whole time? I am sure after a while they justified that it made it look hokier but that could not have been their goal.
