In my experience, computer monitor calibration hardware does not help with video activities. My monitor, and of course my video card, are calibrated with a Monaco Optix unit. The result is dead on accurate for photography. What I see on the screen is what I see on prints coming off an Epson 2400, 4800, etc. It is correct for color, and it is correct for brightness. My prints are not too dark or too light, and I can see fine gradations of color on my monitor.
However, my monitor does not display video the way that a TV does. If I set luminance so that a video looks correct on my monitor, it will invariably be too bright and overexposed on a television. While I have not yet invested in a studio TV monitor, I do attach a portable TV so that I can get a rough idea of how the video will look. That allows me to get a rough idea of how the rendered video will look. The acid test, for me, is a test burn of a DVD which I can then view on a TV. The open issue is whether or not my TVs are reasonably close to accurate. I think they probably are because commercial DVDs look as I expect them to look when displayed on the same TVs.

Since it happens only on certain files, have you tried installing Vegas pro 9 32 bit in addition to the 64 bit version to see if 32 bit will solve your problem?

Might I suggest that you take a course that teaches FCP? That’s what I did when I wanted to know how it compares to Vegas. Actually using the product will teach you far more than anything which might be written in a short post on the forum. You will be able to see how the kind of work you want to do can be done in FCP. You will also see firsthand what some of the limitations of FCP are. The anemic audio function, or the total lack of support for Blu-ray come quickly to mind.

I hate to sound ungracious, but this is not a forum on FCP. I am sure your saga is quite interesting to you, but I already have experience with FCP. I know what it is like, and how it compares to Vegas. I do not come to this forum to read about FCP. Can we restrict the posts to Vegas?

I suspect you need to ask your client how the video looked on their equipment. You might also ask things like what format and bit rate they used in the render. Identifying the file as AVI doesn’t tell us much of anything about what the file contains. There is also the question of how FCP is reading the file. What software is it using?
I guess that, alternately, you could try to look at the video on a Windows machine to see if it looks any different.

I used Getdataback for NTFS a few years ago when I had severe hard drive failure problems. It did a good job of recovering files even though the HD had been reformatted.

January 2, 2010 at 5:01 am in reply to: Sony vegas 8 pro , How i move clips across the time line? You don’t have to move anything. Simply position the time line cursor at the beginning of the first “event” or clip. Type an “I” with the keyboard. Then, position the time line cursor at the end of your video. Type an “O”.
When you render, check the box to render the loop region.

I NEVER upgrade a computer to a new version of Windows. That’s a recipe for failure and frustration. If I want a new version of Windows, I buy a new machine which has all the software and drivers in place, tested, and functioning.
That said, you seem to have opted for Apple a long time ago, and to have a rosey view of what you will find. That has not been my experience with Apple. Apple frequently does not work, and frequently lacks ANY work around. BTW, I haven’t had a Windows BSOD in years.

You will find that jerkiness and sync problems disappear when you render the video to an appropriate format (that is another subject). Be sure to use the “best” or high quality setting for the render. Jerkiness and synch problems mean your computer is not fast enough for Vegas to play it in real time.

Vegas 3? Why not bring the slides directly into the time line? Be sure that the jpegs are sized appropriately for video. Vegas is not the best way to resize photos. Also, a setting of “Best” for a render may resolve some of your issue.
