  • It’s always been like that for me. I don’t think FCP does that, and it was one of the things I didn’t like about FCP>

Actually, I was directing the question to Danny Hayes, but the discussion is here assuming that I did that correctly.

$199 plus the megabucks desktop system with a heavy duty contingent of five or six large, fast hard drives running as a raid array to keep up with the uncompressed video stream. Have you seen the thread on this very subject?

Make sure that all of your audio tracks are recorded at the same sampling rate. If they are not, they will diverge.

BTW, why multiple time lines? All of the tracks can be placed in a single project on a single time line if you are using Vegas Pro.

You should also consider any other audio tracks. When voice over is used, it is a good idea to apply a notch filter to keep those tracks from stomping on the voice or narrative. I don’t recall if there is a built-in preset for this.

I use an old Sony camcorder for this conversion. It will accept an analog signal (including S-Video) and convert it to digital. The result goes out via firewire and Vegas captures it just as if its coming from a DV tape. As I recall, the camcorder feature is called “pass through”. I don’t even need a tape in the Sony camera, and I bought the camera used on eBay.

  • Excuse me? Aside from the ability to calibrate a monitor, I have never heard of any case where Photoshop looks to a video card for improved performance. Could you explain what you mean by this?

You should probably zoom in very close to be sure they do not overlap. I would go at least to the point where you can see individual frames.

  • Vegas does not use the graphics card. Save your money.

Yes, more memory will help. Even more important are multiple, large, fast hard drives. That is a bit more difficult to do in a laptop.

You might also want to check on how big the file coming via BNC is going to be. If it is uncompressed, you may be in for a rude surprise even with a “kick ass” laptop. I recall DSE saying a few years back that uncompressed HD would require a very large, fast raid array to capture the output.
