I am not confusing RGB, YUV/Betacam, YUV SMPTE. 🙂

I am saying that there is a color differemce between 720P DVCPROHD and Downconverted NTSC. Which IS fine, as jeremy pointed out, i need to consider color correcting for 2 timelines instead of just one. Luckily, we are releasing the material Only in NTSC so Its not necessary to have 2 final color corrected timelines.

That Being Said

we shoot on high def to future proof, and we edit in high def to take advantage of image detail AND we show the client in high def on a 4 ft wide plasma screen in a screening room.
Only converting to NTSC for release.

Now, this workflow may be flawed, and we should probably convert to ntsc when digitizing, and only re aquire in high def if and when we need to reposition shots?

OR

there is a magic happy filter/plug in/software application that will convert my Hi Def color space to NTSC color space so i can continue to work as i mentioned?

I also get the same color difference when comparing an m2v made off the FCP hd timeline vs
an m2v made from a D1 layoff (via the card) so i am ruling out the monitor

(right now i use an HD self contained movie to make an NTSC dvd)

1. great idea, use the composite video and analog audio out of a decent dv deck to feed a dvd recorder (we use a model called Lite On) the analog outs may even letterbox the stuff
most decks can display the “User info” and better decks will give you a window burn.
the caveat is if fcp chokes while capturing, you will have to make a couple of chapters on the dvd, stopping one where it choked and resuming on the next.

2. actually mentioned in one, we use a dvd recorder called a “lite on”. consumer grade, variable capacity (6 hours max). and the ability to stop and start before finalizing.

i know i asked this earlier, but i still seem to not see ANY of the Kona flavors on my Intel mac

neither the native ones nor others

i copied the components to the different qt directories

but i get NO kona codecs

There are a number of ways to “upconvert” your footage from Standard Definition (which you now have on the Beta SP) to High Definition, from real time using hardware, like a Kona Card or other converter, to software, compressor for example, or ReSizer.

that being said

all you are doing is simply enlarging your footage. The transfer you made at Beta SP is nice high quality Standard Def Video. To truly get high def, you would have to re transfer all your film pieces to a High Def format, such as HDCam, or DVCPROHD on a high def telecine (see how this racket works?)

If you want to give the stuff some shelf life, the best compromise would be to make it 16×9 SD. To do this we capture at 8 bit uncompressed, then scale it up in Compressor favoring the upper part of the frame, rather than uniformly cropping top and bottom.

I rember reading about how to set compressor for optimum quality from either Ken Stone or Larry Jordan, both a couple o FCP gurus on the internet.

i have tried both straight animation AND “Sheer” rgba and yuva codecs and they dont play in real time either

while we are on this subject (relationship between clips in browser, viewer, and timeline) i have a question:

I am still trying to get my head around the whole master affiliate thing, so is possible to alter a master clip in the browser (speed, filters, properties, motion?0 and have that alteration show up on clips in the timeline? and arent there some things that do “transmit” from the master clip?
