One of the things that makes LTO a viable archive format is that its the Standard in the Financial World like banks, brokers, alchemists (hahaha)
which guarantees that 20 minutes from now you will still be able to recover the data on those tapes. as opposed to other tape formats that have disappeared and been EOL’dWe were using an Onstream for a while, adn the best way it worked was when it was on its own machine so it could run in the Background over ethernet.
The other people on the network would complain sometimes about moving a 100 gBs of media over 100baseT, but the heck with em they cant take a joke!
hope this helps

there was a third party upgrade available for some time now, but its nice to see an official one! even though the sound has improved, i will probably stick with using my “zoom”.
how hard is it to upgrade the firmware? what is it, just flash the PROM over a usb or firewire cable? Hang some chicken entrails over the camera?
thanx peter, and right on topic!

February 23, 2010 at 7:12 pm in reply to: While reconnecting offline files, click out of Final Cut and freezeMatthew
Here are some things i noticed about that
1. sometimes just clicking on any of the final cut panels or panes doesnt bring you back to the application. you may actually have to click the icon in the dock.
2. make sure there isnt a window waiting for a response hidden behinf the reconnect panel, usually one of the warnings about number of tracks, media start and end, and reel number
3. sometimes you have to trash your preferences. if you do not know how to do that, search on this forum.
hope this helps

you said: “Apparently the cable going from the card to the box has an AJA logo on it. It can fit either way”
if you mean the connector(s) on the cable can fit into the sockets on the box or the card either way, be very careful.
the connectors were only designed to go one way, and the shape of the connector should “mate” with the card or the box accordingly.
It may be possible to force the connector the wrong way, which can lead to all kinds of problems like pin damage and such. the connectors are shaped kinda like a capital D, so i always make sure the D shapes line up.
hope this helps

Many threads on this forum about just such a situation. look for responses by Bob Zelin. We had a similar sit. (high school football games) and wound up using a stock samsung consumer VCR with an outboard frame synchronizer to stabilize the signal.
I would rather have used a Pro VHS deck with built in tbc, but thats just the broadcast guy in me. A built in TBC adds a level of correction to the signal you dont get with framestores or synchronizers.
the downside of a pro vhs deck is it can only play VHS at SP, so if your tapes are EP or LP, you need to go consumer!

Is there a way to get the raw footage in again and open the file correctly? You dont have to re-edit if you can recapture. I am assuming you capturded the footage with Timecode from a camera/deck that can be controlled for captureing by final cut. If so, follow the process in the manual for recpaturing.
If you did not capture with timecode, then you are in for a lot of recapturing and eye matching.
BTW, go to a locl computer store, buy a western digital 1 tB drive (can be usb) and once you have finished capturing your footage, make a copy of the footage folder to that drive. then shut the drive off and put it on the shelf. Next time you delete anyhting (or the media drives die, or the footage gets lost or whatever) take the 1tb drive off the shelf, and re-copy the media onto your media drives and BAM back in business!
hope this helps
