  • Slightly OT Canon release firmware update for 5DmkII at last

Posted by Peter Wiggins on March 16, 2010 at 1:37 am

    All,

I know this is slightly off topic, but this is big news – at last Canon has released the 5DMK firmware update

    https://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/firmware.html

    New functions:-

Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.

    NTSC:
    1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
    1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
    640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
    PAL:
    1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
    1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
    640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)

Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

    Enjoy!

Considering workflow advice for the Canon cameras is one of the most common threads here, this is not really off topic at all. Are you updating your Compressor droplet for the new firmware?

I’m with Michael. Up till now, shooting with the 5D has been a world of pain for anyone who wanted to use it for any output other than the web or internal computer use. This firmware upgrade makes the 5D a useable camera for mainstream use.

The day the HDMI works i will run to buy an SLR to pair with the nano.
Meanwhile I think that more than an option, is a beautiful complication.

Well the plugin for Log & Transfer should be out soon so let see if that solves the import issues

    Peter (et al)

there was a third party upgrade available for some time now, but its nice to see an official one! even though the sound has improved, i will probably stick with using my “zoom”.

how hard is it to upgrade the firmware? what is it, just flash the PROM over a usb or firewire cable? Hang some chicken entrails over the camera?

thanx peter, and right on topic!

    Upgrading is really easy,

    Format a card
Copy firmware from website onto card
Power up 5D & click on firmware in menu
    Follow instructions
    Power off
    Take battery out & replace

took longer to download firmware than the update!
