I was looking for editshare on the web, and i got this “alternative to editshare”:

they sent me a quote that was almost 4,000 cheaper than editshare. I dont know how well the device works, but they seem real eager to answer questions and get you up and running.
Caveat, the best way to do these Gig e sharing systems, is to set up a network of Just your fcp machines, so no additional traffic slows you down.

If you are not sure about what answer you are getting, cinduct a speed test 🙂
aja has a system test on their website that checks the read write speed of your system, and I am sure it uses the cpu as well as drives.
take everything off your fcp box, run the test like 10 times and write down the average write and read speds,then re install it all and run the test another ten times and see if there is a difference (probably not but you never know)
I know that AVID codecs will conflict with FCP, so avoid those)
and macs may be immune to viruses now, but not for long, so email apps are dangerous in that regard.
I keep fcp, some adobe apps, safari, ms office, a few video utilities, and have not seen any out of the ordinary issues.

Also, sticking your head in a tub of water 3 times and only take it out twice.

thats too bad.
even thougth the gear was awful, a lot of people from my class and later went on to do great things.
I think that someone finally gave them some money, and they bought a whole bunch of good gear (one purchase was something like 50 media 100’s). Maybe that was the death knell? good gear and the kids got lazy!
sooo we should all send our old gear to emerson, so as to improve the quality of students that comes from there!! huh? waddya say???

I was a student at emerson college from 75 to 79 (1975),
for a place that was supposed to be a very good communications school, we had the worst gear around. mostly discards from radio and tv stations (we actually had the original mccurdy console used on the Honeymooners. it was too heavy to get up the stairs so we left it in the lobby)
we groused about the gear, but I know it taught us how to use waht we had to make stuff, and to work around limitations to get the job done.
let the students use Windows Movie Maker, (which is supposed to be better thant iMovie) then they will focus on editing, and not on which button to press.
