    Hi all

I do not sure if this is on topic, but anyway

I have a ProMax 4 drive array with a tempo 4 channel SATA controller residing on a G5 Mac Pro. The Array is configured for Raid 0, and has 950 gB of formatted space, its connected to the G5 with 4 15″ SATA cables

I want to be able to unplug the 4 drive cables, and move it to an Intel Mac Pro that also has a 4 or 8 channel SATA controller. I then want to be able to plug in my 4 drive cables, and continue editing. Is This Possible? My boss says another editor has been doing this (nice the way bosses say that, huh?)
Does the striping information reside on the drive? or is it in the OS? would this work with a single esata cable to a “multiplier” array, so that the 4 channels are connected internally in the array, rather than between array and computer?

    thanx

In the case of these chassis, the Raid information is written to the headers on the drive itself so it should work as long as it was striped using OSX and not some other custom software raid. What Raid controller is in the second MacPro?

Not sure about port multiplication, but my instinct tells me that it should work as well since the info is stored on the drives themselves and not anywhere else. The cables are just the pipeline that transfers the data and it’ll send whatever the computer/drives pass through it.

Back that stuff up just in case.

    Bob,

It will absolutely work. I have a two and four bay enclosure that I have move around between machines without a hiccup.

    wow! thanx

Do we ned to put a matching Tempo Controller on the second machine? ie do all the SATA controllers have to be identical?

You’re bound to get fewer surprises if you install a like host controller card, but its not 100% absolutely necessary.
