so then why do i have to know my 3:2 cadence when i need to conform a clip in cinema tools, but after effects determines the cadence for me, as well as I versus P.
The only way to determine 3:2 cadence in FCP is with third party plugins, at least as far as i can tell, and maybe i am missing something,
so if apple has to patent a detector, thats OK by me. (anything to helps sort out this format BS!)
right?

Its a good idea anytime you have to “re” or “convert” footage or sound, to wait uuntil your edit is done and you have made decisions about waht shots you will use, then whatever you need to “re or convert” you are doing with the absolute minimum.
even if your clients clients wants to cahnge something, its still only a one or 2 shots (you hope 🙂 )
another thing to consider when mixing PAL and NTSC is that even with good standards conversions, I can still tell the difference between the 2, and maybe your client can too. Be ready to add some kind of time or frame manipulation to your NTSC footage to get it to “cut” with the PAL so it all looks like it was shot the same (you may never get a perfect match, but you can get close!)

do yourself a favor, go to best buy (or circuit city, or even radio shack) and get a cheap dvd recorder, and feed your hdv deck audio and video into the recorder adn make your transcription copies that way
we have an m10u and you can display the Time Code on the video outs as well as on the built in LCD screen and plug that into a Lite On Set Top DVD recorder. If we are jammed up we also use our camera and feed a second dvd recorder, also a lite on. you dont tie up your fcp box, its realtime, and its cheap. (besides unless you have an army of transcribers standing by, its always going to take longer to transcribe than to make dvd’s)
what would be slick is if we could find a foot pedal controller for a dvd player we could give to our transcriber

here is a thought: I have a client who i am making a show for right now, and we were reviewing some footage shot 2 years ago, and she is saying things like “that hairstyle is too dated” and “oh that dress is so nineties” in essence rendering a good half of the stuff worthless
lets remember we work in a world where fashions and styles change all the time. Unless your subject matter is wildlife or guys in hospital scrubs, the “shelf life” of your footage is only going to be about 3 years before it start to look dated. then you would have to wait about 5 more years before you can sell it as historical stock footage!
kinda puts a different priority on archiving, doesnt it
BTW for now i used hard drives for current projects, and recapture from source tapes when neceesary.

some thoughts, as i am a former edit editor myself
did you try changing the b-reel / pre read options around?
I understand CMX 3600 is the best format
stupid question, but are you importing edl and not batch list?
export an edl from fcp and compare it to your edl in a simple text editor and see if there are differences in the annotations or durations
and of course, try trashing the preferences
can you send me the edl via email, and i will try and open it on my version of fcp. If i get it
i will send you the project (i am using 5.1.4)hope this helps

i am using an m10u. its slow for capturing, and it only takes mini dv tapes (its basically the camera without the imaging stuff) I would hope that the ability to handle larger tapes would mean better tape handling/response, but i do not know
there are threads here on the m25u and converters to get digital out (as opposed to analog component)
