hey walter
when i used to use 2 bvu 800’s i could hit a button marked preroll, and the tape would back up 5 seconds before the edit. How Come Final Cut Pro Doesnt Do THat! 🙂
we had the same deal with media 100. we would be like “hey its yuv not rgb” and clients would be like “its not an avid” and we would be like “look how fast i can jump into after effects” and clients would be like “its still not an avid” and when we got d vision and edit it was the same thing.
and frank:
it took me 6 months to get proficienat w FCP, and I know now that when a training course or book or tutorial, of which there are a lot, said “DO it this way”, but the FCP manual said “you can do this” the trainer had tried waht the manual said but it did not work, so the trainer found a workaround
capiche?once you know FCP’s plus and minuses, its not too bad

In order to get a handle on the exact nature of the problem, we need to know the exact configurations and workflow you are implementing.
ie waht deck are you using? How are you controlling the deck? how is the video getting out of the deck?
(I have an M10U, and FCP 5.1.4 running on a dual core intel.
I am using a Kona LHe to capture Component Video from the VTR and compress it to DV50 16×9. I am controlling the deck via firewire using the HDV firewire deck control preset in FCP (modified for control only) I have the deck set to NOT firewire downconvert, and i have the component video out set to squeeze)when you say “downconvert to DV” are you dubbing from hdv tape to DV tape? digitizing into FCP at DV?
The issues with format and such are allways the result of minutae being overlooked, so give us as much minutae as you can,
that being said. I can offer one suggestion:
If you were able to perform this workflow before, and you cannot now, what has changed? new deck? new shooter?

I feel the pain. Its so frustrating when the manual sez you can do something, and you cant (like nesting HAHAHA)
FWIW, i never media mangle my projects, When a project is done, I either have a native quicktime or a tape of the whole show, as well as the show with no or minimal graphics. WHen clients call to revise or repurpose, I use that as a a source, and recapture only whats needed to make the revisions.
its an old school “dub down the master” way of doing it, but it saves a lot of recapture headaches.

When you originally made the files, did you have anything in the Background? like a still or a clip for reference?
The error message refers to elements you used in livetype that are not type, such as a still or clip on the Background layer
When you open in editor ie live type, relink the Background media or delete the Background Clip, then save.
once you re render the livetype clip in FCP you should be fine

I am still on 5.1.4, but I have always though aerosmith rocked!
Its gotta be tyler and perry together, or else its not aerosmith (there were a couple of albums in the 80’s that dont really count)

If you have a pro deck which has connections on the back for a Drop Out Compensator aka DOC, which is usually an “off tape RF” connection, as well as advance sync, then you should look for Fortel, Hottronic, For-A, and Sony TBCs. The fortel turbo was one of the best, with these great chroma decoding circuits, and i have seen them on ebay for 500
the DOC and Advance sync are waht give you a true “Time Base Corrected” signal which is cleaner to capture or even bump to DV or BetaSP
Of course if you dont have those connections, and you are dealing with a consumer VHS deck, you might as well dub the material to DV, digitize it, and do any correction in FCP
its not the best but its better than trying to dump it straight in.

have you tried some of the more remedial things? someimes this
“unspecified path” bug can be fixed by trashing prefs.You could also try media managing all the media over to a new job, thereby re writing the database with the current locations of the media ie move all media a create a new project.
when ever i get this “unsepcified path” error I relink the files then save as new project.
btw it is a bug so if you could do an apple feedback and let them know, because apple needs to know that this is broken.
