  • HDV-TC Breaks & getting stuck halfway through tape

Posted by Mike Daniels on May 5, 2008 at 6:48 pm

we get an HDV project from time to time, 90 percent of our footage is 24p DV footage so we like to do a down convert with the HDV footage to DV, since it might end up in a DV project down the road. This time around every tape has been giving us 20-30 TC breaks. and Sometimes just sitting at one point in the tape and digitizing the same 5 second clip over and over again.

The tapes have very few TC breaks in them to start with, maybe 5-6. sometimes less

    my troubleshoot list includes
    Digitize to Our San
    Digitize to External G-Raid
digitize from deck and from Camera
    no Down-convert-just straight-HDV ingest
    FCP 5.1.4 & FCP 6
    Clean the heads
    have tried multiply tapes
    Dumped Prefs
    Tried multiple edit stations

We digitized one of this producers HDV project a few weeks back with down-convert and had no problems what so ever, same deck, might have been different camera though.

Well if you have any insight on why some many TC breaks and why it keeps getting stuck at one point that would be great. thanks in advanced, also posted in the HDV forum

    Mike

In order to get a handle on the exact nature of the problem, we need to know the exact configurations and workflow you are implementing.

ie waht deck are you using? How are you controlling the deck? how is the video getting out of the deck?

(I have an M10U, and FCP 5.1.4 running on a dual core intel.
I am using a Kona LHe to capture Component Video from the VTR and compress it to DV50 16×9. I am controlling the deck via firewire using the HDV firewire deck control preset in FCP (modified for control only) I have the deck set to NOT firewire downconvert, and i have the component video out set to squeeze)

when you say “downconvert to DV” are you dubbing from hdv tape to DV tape? digitizing into FCP at DV?

The issues with format and such are allways the result of minutae being overlooked, so give us as much minutae as you can,

that being said. I can offer one suggestion:

If you were able to perform this workflow before, and you cannot now, what has changed? new deck? new shooter?

    hope this helps

    Thanks Bob,

    We are using the

    Sony Z1 camera
    HVR-M10 Sony Deck
    Digitizing Via Firewire
Down convert on the deck while digitizing, set to DV/Squeeze
Same shooter, same deck, it might be a different camera we have 3 Z1’s not sure which one was used on the time everything worked.

    FCP 5.1.4
    QT 7.4.1
    MacPro Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    5 Gbs ram

New developments are we tried to digitize using our FCP 6 Station and things seem to be working there for the time being.

Under DV Downconvert, try switching the Audio Lock Mode once

ie if its on switch it off or vica versa

also force the deck into HDV not Auto

and one thing i have found is that mor often than not you have to restart the computer with the deck on for FCP to “see it” correctly.

    hope this helps

ok great i am going to give that Audio Lock Mode a try. But for now everything seems to be working perfect using FCP 6.

I Guess there could be something going on with our version of 5.1.4 they are both on the same system but just partioned on different drives, so we are essentially using the same computer
