You appear to be out of my league. But, have you checked the obvious, the frame rate of the videocam, and frame rate in your software. This happens on horizontal panning in the latest Canon 5D Mark II video in 1920 x 1080 mode, it is a lens image stabilization problem in this case and not the software, I know you have tried different cameras but, the problem could be in the cameras or lens (according to Canon Australia) they now make IS lens to fix this pixel shift or judder artifact .
Good luck, we do not pan much anymore as it is very noticeable on a large Sony 46″ Bravia Full HD

I must admit, I am surprised it crashes, mov files freeze the timeline, but, you may need to render them first, we do. Again, mov files edited in Premiere and taken over to Vegas as m2t @ 1920 x 1080 has caused us no problems. We did have Export to tape issues back to a Canon HV20 with Premiere Pro but, it worked easily in Vegas, do not ask me why ?

Quicktime Pro is useless except it is needed to use mov files in Premiere Pro and will not work without it.But, you may need it to open up mov, files ?

You are so right, same problem with Premiere pro 1.5.1 and Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ 800 FSB & 2 Gb Ram, it does a good job , but, to put 35 minutes of Quicktime Mov. on the timeline, takes 4 to 5 hours (overnight) to render so that you can work with it.

Ziess is very good, but, if it is not Stabilised in lens or body forget it.
No zoom advantage in fixed 50mm , I would find it useless.
We use a Canon F1.2 L Pro series 55mm in low light, but, the ISO setting of Automatic in the Canon 5D to say 6400 makes these lens obsolete. Trust me we have used them ( the 55mm fixed lens) for 25 years, great images, no versatality.

I should have added the length of video recorded on a 4mb CF card SanDisk Extreme IV UDMA @ 45MB/s as the output of the Canon is about 38MB/s cost about $120 and you would need a few of these on a controlled planned shoot as it will only run for 12 mins of High definition clips..And you can record magnificent stills at the same time.
As the mic is only mono and you may hear some motor noise from the IS lenses you should equip the unit with a Rode Stereo X/Y Mike on the hot shoe. It removes noise and gives outstanding stereo.
We have done seven major projects from travel, fashion shows, art gallery presentations etc. the results are broadcast quality.
But, editing will be slower than the Sony .

Well Brian,
The Sony is undoubtedly a great video unit , but, I checked some footage out of our little Canon HV20 in HDV against the Sony and I could not tell the difference. However, we have used the Canon EOS 5D mark II in Australia, New Zealand and Norfolk Island.
If you use a IS image Stabilised Lens , maybe a 28-135mm IS F 3.5 or a Canon IS L series F 4 70–200mm mainly because it stabilises panning ( so they tell me)
The quality out of this camera is extrodinary in 19250 x 1080p.
You will need a powerfull computer to handle the H264 mov. files on the timeline as they need to be rendered befor editing. Unlike normal HDV Cmacorders. I wish you all the best hand holding.

Depends what you are going to use it for
1. Stills : We use a Canon EF 2.8L 24-70 mm for the best results.
2. Video : High definition 1920 x 1080 use only a IS image stabilized Lens if hand held like a Canon EF F 3.5 28-135mm IS Lens, the stills are magic but, move the camera in a pann horizontally and you may get some pixel movement if not done smoothly
3. Canon recommend to use the L series 70-200mm F 4.0 IS Lens as the stabilizer works differently to reduce “pixel movement” in panning, so they tell me.
4. Used correctly this camera is magic, the results in High Definition on a Sony Bravia 46″ Full HD are stunning.

The obvious , have you connected the camcorder , and applied the correct setting..
Also, have you made the timeline live ???????????????
Ps. you could try Exporting to Movie using the Cineform Preset, maybe Cineform avi, try re-importing to a New Project or just use the Consumer Premiere Elements (if you have it), it appears more friendly and it works here if we have gremlins. In Premiere Pro 1.5.1 you could end up with the mt2 file , maybe the same in CS4 and this can be Exported to Tape ? if we have intermittent Export to Tape problems we often do that. Incidently we Export to a Canon HV 20 which gives us very professional results on a 46″ Sony Bravia HD Monitor.
good luck.
Ps. We only work now in High definition 1920 x 1080 or 1440 x 1080 p

November 11, 2009 at 4:25 am in reply to: H264 doesn’t appear under quicktime render settingsI would try Sony Vegas 9 Platinum Edition (if you have it) as a recent H264 or mov file after being edited in Premiere Pro and outputed to mt2 used by us was easily Exported to tape from Vegas.
The reason was > We had some problems Exporting to Tape in Premiere Pro.
