  • H264 doesn’t appear under quicktime render settings

Posted by Mike Thompson on November 10, 2009 at 12:35 pm

I want to render my quicktime .mov in h264, just as my digital camera produces movs in h264. But in render options I only have h261 and h263 in my video format list.

How do I install h264 on the system? To use with movs.

    Thanks

The H.264 codec is not distributed with the free version of QT on Windows machines. I believe it is in QTPro, but not sure if it’d show up in the Render As options if you bought that anyhow.

Even so, you have a number of great H.264 options: MainConcept AVC, Sony AVC and (more or less) Windows WMV. I currently prefer MainConcept for quality and stability.

I would try Sony Vegas 9 Platinum Edition (if you have it) as a recent H264 or mov file after being edited in Premiere Pro and outputed to mt2 used by us was easily Exported to tape from Vegas.

The reason was > We had some problems Exporting to Tape in Premiere Pro.

You can’t. 🙁 Vegas Pro uses it’s own Quicktime plug-in support that doesn’t use Quicktime Pro features. I was very disappointing to find this out after purchasing Quicktime Pro for exactly this feature. As Eric pointed out, Vegas supports h.264 through it’s MainConcept AVC and Sony AVC encoders.

    Agree,

Quicktime Pro is useless except it is needed to use mov files in Premiere Pro and will not work without it.But, you may need it to open up mov, files ?
