I was actually trying to grab a seat at the avid university section where they were having a workshop on the new mac media composers… from what i saw it looked fantastic, but their pricing!!! 30k is good money for that system and i believe that money will be better spent elsewhere. Let me know how it compares to FCP and media100 when you get it.

I do feel much better about Boris and their commitment to reviving the media100 as a major player in the NLE arena ,but how much longer is it going to be when m100 can go head to head against the media composers and FCP systems? 2 years? 3 years?

by 2008 most post houses and/or boutiques will have already made their NLE choice decision by then and it will be too little too late. After going to this NAB, i see no reason why we should wait on making a decision regarding the format we will be shooting and editing on for the next several years. We are totally sold on XDCAM HD now and want to take advantage of its new features. its a new era with these cards and discs and clip-importing capabilities. Media100 is just the same old i/o hardware in new clothes. linear acquisition and mastering. We are buying one final cut system with a kona3 to see what the hype is all about. There is nothing for us to get excited about anymore except MJPEGB capturing. 24P, MJPEG, DV, HDV and mxf support must be implemented into media100HD within the next year or im afraid this system is doomed.

    jmho

We will keep our media100 HD and i systems, but they will all take a backseat now to a final cut system with all the bells and whistles. if m100 bounces back, we’ll happily sell the FCP system and buy more media100s. i really really want media100 to come back strong!!!

its not an easy road ahead guys, i can tell you that. media100 will never be able to be at the same pace as media100 and avid. they just dont have enough manpower right now. hopefully sales will pick up and they will be able to hire some mroe engineers but from what i understood the main focus is making pci express compatible boards and intel compatible software. Compressed HD is also on the top of the list. firewire HDV and 24p dont seem to be at the top of the list right now.

i would have to assume avid and fcp have at least 50+ software engineers working on MXF support and 24p and every other new format. thats a lot. i doubt if media100 even has 10.

But media100 is not all to blame guys, apple must share some blame because they keep changing their hardware whenever they feel like it and like keeping it a secret until they unveil their new products. good marketing, but its terrible for developers.

as long as i can digitize and master HDSDI and have deck control, i think im gonna be in ok shape. still waiting for OMF… but im not going to bet the house on any breakthrough features being implemented by m100 soon.

there is no way to change your aspect in the bin. I tried changin media attributes and the only thing it lets me change is my input setup, reel name and clip name. There has to be a way. Does nobody else create AE renders for 16×9 timelines?

Oh goody! just arrived in las vegas and cant wait to get to the booth tomorrow morning. All that news is fine and dandy, but when will we be able to work with compressed HD? when can we digitize through firewire? HDV? will these features be a software only upgrade for both HDX and AJA?

Panasonic BT-LH1700W – it it fantastic. Just wish it had more than one dedicated SDI input and thru. But it also has YC video, and HD.SD component thru as well with built in waveform and split screen and DC power. Highly recommended

i edit for NTSC… i think its upper field for NTSC HD, but lower field for 720×486 using the Media100HD codec… golly this is confusing.

    its a big frustrating mess.

And also, if you shoot HDV you can only output the native format from which you shoot on (as in shooting HDV will only output HDV through firewire). The problem is that these converter boxes usually work pretty well with final cut pro and avid and premiere, but nowhere in any of their documentation does it say anything about media100i or HD. Media100 needs to get with the program ASAP and at least give us DV support for crying out loud. Why should i have to have an expensive RS422 component/SDI in/out DV deck when i can just use firewire? same with HDV, man. even if it has to digitize then encode/convert not on the fly, ill be happy as long as the process can be automated. this isn’t rocket science here.

if media100sw will have support for third party cards i think that would be the best media100 move of all time, and i would happily buy SW and a KONA3 card. cant waaiiiiiiit till NAB….

So really the only solution is to edit off of an HDCAM deck or a a DVCPROHD deck. Well i guess this is that “transitional” period when software has to catch up with the hardware. I have several hours worth of tapes to digitize and although i have space on my xserve raid, it cannot live there forever and i know i will have to delete it and come back to it in a few months.

I’m hoping i can digitize the entire reels now with timecode through the miranda and hopefully wait for media100 or another third party product to come along at NAB that will let me use my existing EDL’s/timelines to batch reacquire properly from. fingers crossed. Retransferring all the footage to HDCAM or DVCPROHD is just gonna be too costly with daily deck rental rates and tape stock. i would rather buy the equipment and shoot on it rather than rent it. isnt this the whole reason they created HDV in the first place so that we could save a little money?

I also am curious to hear from anyone a particular system that works absolutely perfect with HDV as of now… vegas? edius? avid? FCP? premiere? if there is i may entertain the idea of building a temporary “band-aid” system to keep us moving along until a media100/HDV/DV solution arrives
