I like to do it this way.

Put the read head at the head or tail of a clip.
With the shift key held down push the arrow key on the keyboard so the read head goes one second into the clip.
Use the razor blade tool to slice the clip.

    Now,

do a fade in or out with the rubber bands, going the full length of the one second clip.
Select that one second clip and save as a favored.

Now when editing, just go one second into the clip and slice it and drag the favored, it works for me as a quick solution.

The David la Chapelle look is mostly created in post. To my knowledge he shoots with film and there is no film, other than Ektachrome X, which has not been sold for about 20 years and for still use only which can come close the the look he produces.

Yes there is the lighting and the color and props/setting etc but that is not camera dependent.

I don’t think I have seen anything he has done in video or motion film, his lighting is so harsh I cant imagine the subjects in such video or films move around too much, his lighting seems to depend so much on quick fall off of the lights highest value things would look even more ugly then they already look in stills.

This is news to me. I once had a problem with doing the same thing but after coming in the next day to do it again it worked fine. I have been insert editing both video and sound since V1.25, although Apple at the time highly recommended that you not do it for frame accurate edits, it worked every time with the A500 Digibeta. With V5 I have only had one problem. I worked that problem from every possible angle I could imagine at least two hours of messing around. When I came in the next day and tried again, it worked fine. You can use the 8 point garbage matte, but it is a bit of a clunky tool.

I think you put your finger on exactly what is WRONG with this thing, what is it? Nice web site but, what is it? Can you imagine spending lots of money on developing something and then starting the sales thing and STILL what is this thing? I guess we are dopes because we don

I think any Kodak or Fuji film with an ASA of 500 pushed one stop and shot with fast primes would blow away any video camera with respect to noise, image quality and speed (exposure). Thirty years ago the European DPs were showing us all how they could shoot with natural light and get great results. Nester Alamendros and others shooting American films 20 years ago did the same in the US.

If you are a producer or DP of a “film” shot on video would it not be in your interest to say everything and anything that states that you did the right thing shooting in video for all the right reasons and results? Look at it the other way, do you ever expect a producer or DP to say, gees we screwed up on this one, shot it in video, boy was that a mistake.

    I don

For some reason I remember April 99 being the starting point for its use. I remember all the lead ups to it with MacroMedia taking three years to develop it under the name Key Grip and then Apple got it, several pix were posted of its interface on some web site and in April it came out. I dont know why I have such a strong memory of this date.

Collatoral was shot on video with the same director, I would guess this FILM was shot on video, the look has a video quality about it. As good as a vericam and CineAlta look there is still a video quality about them. As far as the color and other issues, I have seen this look many many many times. Can you say green… the grit and contrast seems to always be married to green. Fight Club, 7, Matrix etc.

Is this narrative, interviews inside outside day night etc? For outside, day, low angles a polarizer filter might be nice…

If its narrative try to shoot matching close ups, in other words for a given scene if you shoot one person in close up at 60mm on the lens, shoot the other peoples close up at 60mm on the lens.

These days looking like a professional is relative, I don

This might sound odd but as an experiment I would export the offending clip/composition and maybe try a few different settings then bring it back in. It wont necessarily answer what is wrong but it will get you closer to an understanding and maybe eliminate some issues that you otherwise might have included in your list of possible reasons.
