I’m trying to determine which core amount is of value to me.
My primary tools are Final Cut Pro & Compressor, (using XDCAM footage). Also, On2 Flix Pro for rendering into FLV’s
The slowest is: FCP rendering uncompressed Quicktimes. Those Quicktimes then go into Compressor for reformating, then into On2 for FLV’s

So Software that’s important to me every day is:
FCP
Compressor
Photoshop
After Effects

I’m still using my trusty (but slow) Dual G5

I’m in the exact same situation with a Dual G5 editing XDCAM in FCP, using an external Firewire. Timeline plays poorly, but works.
FCP’s slow playback and rendering of XDCAM are my issues

Unfortunately my client insists. I tried explaining that no one would tell the difference.
But they invested in XDCAM and want it pushed all the way through. I got the feeling to pursue the idea of faster everything, would be impertinent on my part. So to make them happy and get the work….
Perhaps I’ll bring it up again… with samples and cost savings.

I’m going speaker phone, surrounded in acoustic foam, with my Sony ECM672 pointed right in.
The tests are reasonably clear. The biggest problem is the breathing noise from guy talking on phone. Mostly from the nose I think…
Wonder how to tone that down?

Thanks for taking the time and the great information!!
“Why are you encoding in Compressor and then encoding in Flix?”
The theory was to use compressor to resize the big xdcam quicktime to a clean, web-sized 640×360, proRes for the encoder to use. This way the On2 encoding part is very fast & clean. Otherwise, Flix was extremely slow…
“Why not H-264?”
I think, I could not find H264 encoding that gave me Cue points? I have to have Cue points.

Back to Compressor: Do I even need Frame Controls Turned On? All I wanted to do is resize and convert to Prores, It’s all shot progressive.. I’m not sure how to turn-off Deinterlace… Just turn off Frame Controls?

Mac Dual 2.7 G5, Tiger 10.4.11
