I second that…it works great and get a second drive for backup. The clients I work for do this all the time. We’ve done international projects for two weeks at a time in the field with this workflow. And we can edit on site to post projects from the field when needed. Firewire 800 drives are fast enough to edit.

If you’re considering wedding work, I’ve seen several companies offering same-day editing for playback at the reception. It’s great not to have to spend time digitizing from tape.

I have an EX1 that you might be interested in.

I have a Canopus ADVC300 for sale on ebay you might check out. It’ll take composite video or S-video and stereo audio and spit out to DV firewire. The 300 includes a TBC to stabilize footage.

The Canopus 110 is also a good option.

    Here’s a link if interested

  • Thank you Jerry.
I gather then you would recommend shooting the interviews on the EX1 at 30P (29.97)?

    thanks again.

It’s about time that we Xpress Pro users get the full Media Composer toolset for a reasonable amount. $500 to upgrade to MC is not bad, considering the upgrade from XpressDV to Xpress Pro…except I’ll have to buy a new machine to run it.

Buying a new MC package still costs a lot more than the whole FCS.

Thanks Bob for the good info.

I don’t object to spending the money on good system components, I just didn’t understand where the AJA converter fits in this process and what else is needed to get that old, historic, crap into a Kona 3.

    >>a Umatic VCR (like a 3/4″ VCR) that is not time base corrected will not work with any A/D converter<<
    Hi Bob,
What does one need then to get an analog, non-TBC source into a Kona3 card?
It seems like the HD10, with composite and YC input capability, is a perfect fit for this need.

    Thanks,

    Try Cinematize 2.0 by Miraizon

I’ve used it and the footage looks great. A little slow on the conversion process.

It’s likely the problem is Quicktime 7
I rolled back to 6.5 and the problem is gone.

Google for quicktime 6.5 for a quick download. Uninstall 7, install 6.5 AE exports audio and video.

You might lose access to iTunes.

    Hope this helps
