    Hello all.
    I haven’t had to deal with mixed frame rates until now. I’ve been looking through the posts and reading up on hardware options but I’d appreciate your wisdom and recommendations.

    I’m helping a youth camp put together a project for distribution on standard DVD and for web.

    The client has footage in a couple of different formats:
    HDCam shot on F900: 23.98P 16:9. (most of the b-roll)
    Some Betacam SP: 29.97i 4:3.
    A few tapes of HDV Sony Z1U: 1080-60i (not cineframe) 16:9.

    And then there’s the new interviews to be shot on an EX1 23.98P 16:9.

    The project will be rough cut on FCP using my MBP and then sent to an editor using FCP on a MacPro with Kona 3.
    The final project will be output for distribution via standard DVD, not Blueray.

    How would you recommend setting up the project and bringing in all the footage? SD? Letterboxed? 29.97? 23.98?

    Would you set up the project for SD and have all the footage digitized in some common SD format like ProRes?

    I’m considering an MXO2 LE or an IO HD to help get this stuff in. If I’m reading correctly, they can deal with the different frame rates and HD/SD conversions.

    I’d offline in ProRes LT or Proxy for a laptop offline.

    Since most of your footage is HD, then it sure seems the best to edit the final in HD. Even though you’ll be delivering SD DVD’s, the end result would look better. Likely best to capture all at 29.97… you’re mixed frame rates will be tougher to deal with than just staying at 29.97 all the way too.

    However there’s nothing stopping you from editing and finishing in SD if you’d prefer that for some reason, but work in 29.97 all the way.

    I gather then you would recommend shooting the interviews on the EX1 at 30P (29.97)?

    Yes. There are exactly three reasons to work in 24 fps. Bandwidth issues, length of program issues or you’re printing to film. If the consumption is to be a DVD it will be primarily played on TV set that can only display 29.97, so it stands to reason that if you can just work in 29.97 you should as long as one of the above issues aren’t involved. In your case they don’t sound like they are unless your program will be over an hour and half or so.. then it begins to matter about fitting it on a single sided DVD. The look is the same in the end otherwise.
