If you are going to complete the project on your machine without needing to send it outside then use the recommended native workflow. I shoot with the Sony NX5U which produces AVCHD files. My workflow is to copy the entire card to my media drive. In Premiere use the media browser to import the files into your project. I find working with native AVCHD files to be acceptable. Jog and shuttling the files in the viewer is not as robust as I would like it to be. But it all works without the need to transcode. I don’t have a NVidia card which as I understand it helps with playback of AVCHD content.

Premiere Pro 5.5 is the FCP8 upgrade you were waiting for.

Glad to hear that Rick. I really like my NX5U. I hope Apple gets the Log & transfer updated soon to work with these files better. It sucks not having the timecode carry over to the transferred file. Plus I would like to have more options for the audio.

Did you record your audio at the default setting of PCM? If you did, that could be your problem. FCP does not handle PCM audio well. Change your audio setting on the camera to Dolby and you should see an improvement with Log & Transfer.

Hey Bob! The system you built for us here at the Sheriff’s office has been working perfectly. I’m getting bids for for a new HVR-1500A right now so that’s why I was familiar with the specs. I’m looking to replace the DSR-40 with it.

I believe that the new Sony HVR-1500A can record via HD-SDI.

    Mari,

Glad to hear that it is working for you. It’s such a frustrating problem. I don’t think the water cooled dual 2.5 G5s was one of Apple’s better designs.

    Mari,

I have the same setup as you and experienced the same problem. I could not figure it out to save my life. I checked the system logs and found out that the processors were starting to overheat so the system shut it self down as a safety precaution. This would only happen when I ran compressor which is processor intensive. I place a room fan directly in front of the computer when I run compressor and have not had the computer shut down during an encode since. Give it a try and good luck!

October 16, 2006 at 12:23 pm in reply to: Strange issue with Compressor

Just a follow up post. I was able to complete my projects so now I’ll have time to try and figure out what’s going on. I did check the console system logs and noticed that it reported a thermal event before it went to sleep. With compressor 1.X the fans would ramp up full speed while it was encoding but with compressor 2.1 the fans just run at a normal speed. Has anyone else noticed a difference with fan speed since upgrading? Thanks!

I tried several different mouse alternatives. I never felt comfortable with the tablet as a mouse substitute. I tried the Kensington Expert Mouse trackball and fell in love with it. No more wrist strain.
