I sent my firewire 800 drive chassis back to Granite. They bench tested it and could not find anyhting wrong with. They went ahead and replaced it anyway. I still get the same problems with the new FW800chassis. I took a firewire 400 chassis connected to my G4 and connected it the G5. I plugged in the same drive sled (these are removable drive systems) into the FW 400 and it captured perfectly. So, I think that my problem is either the FW800 cable or the port on the G5.

I get the same thing when I export a reference movie. I’m not sure what FCP is doing but it’s doing something. One thing that I’ve noticed is while it’s doing its thing the viewer, canvas, and timline windows will all be dimmed. Once its done you’ll notice one of the windows will be active and now you can start working again. It usually only takes a minute or two.

Just a follow up to this post for anyone interested. I tracked my problem down to an issue with my external FW800 drive. I was able to capture to the internal drive with no problems.

I machine was purchased in the fall of 2004 and is out of warranty. Apple does not sell the Apple Care extended warranty in Florida. The tech is from my local Apple reseller and they are an Apple certified repair center.

I tested the battery and it looks good. I dropped off the machine with my Apple tech today so hopefully they can figure it out. Thanks everyone who responded for taking the time to help me out. I’ll report back with the diagnosis.

I received my Kensington Expert Mouse last week. This is my first trackball. I didn’t think that I would like it but I wanted to find something to ease the discomfort I’m developing in my wrist. I’ve tried the Wacom tablets and it just does not work as a mouse replacement for me. So far I’m really enjoying the trackball. There’s an adjustment period with learning it but I really like it as a mouse replacement. It has four programmable buttons and has acceleration. The acceleration feature lets the mouse move quickly from one monitor to the other but also works precisely for detailed work.
