why does FCP spin endlessly after exporting a …
Does anyone have any idea why FCP gives me an endlessly spinning color ball when I click on the program after it exports my 89 min movie as a QT movie with the ‘make movie self contained’ box UNchecked? It does it every time I export it NOT self contained, but, when I export it as a self contained movie it acts totally normal afterwards.
It makes the NOT self contained QT movie just fine, but the only way I can get out of the spinning color ball is to force quit the program, which also takes a very long time to get the finder to let me do. I’m so perplexed by this, and would really appreciate any info on why it’s doing this. Thanks so much!

Let the ball spin, it’ll eventually catch up with itself. This happens to me to when exporting reference movies and with an 89 minute program, you will have to be patient and wait a little longer. A NOT self contained movie is called a reference movie.

I did let it spin on after the last time I tried doing a reference movie, and it spun on for at least 3 hours before I finally did force it to quit. Does that sound like what you’re talking about? It makes me wonder if I should just do a self-contained movie (since I do have the drive space), because ultimately it takes WAY longer to do the reference movie, if I were to let it spin. Do you know what could be making it need to catch up with itself?

Is your timeline fully rendered including ‘full’ effects? If you have the space, a self contained hurts no one.

I get the same thing when I export a reference movie. I’m not sure what FCP is doing but it’s doing something. One thing that I’ve noticed is while it’s doing its thing the viewer, canvas, and timline windows will all be dimmed. Once its done you’ll notice one of the windows will be active and now you can start working again. It usually only takes a minute or two.
