I’m sure many of you may share my severe disappointment with FCP X. Hooray for Background editing, but what did you do to the rest of my precious FCP!! I’m sure that if I spent enough time in there I could customize it back to it’s former glory, but who has the time for that.

I have been a professionally editing for about 5+ years now, primarily using FCP (some AVID) and am currently building a small production company and as of a month ago, I had planned to use Final Cut Pro throughout the office. However as a result of this catastrophe of an “upgrade”, I am seriously thinking of going all Premiere… This sounds absurd to me. I suppose I am still thinking of Premiere circa 2002.

Before anyone goes AVID crazy on me; it’s just too expensive and more up and coming young editors are savvy on FCP. I think AVID 5 is amazing, but for better or worse, it is what it is.

Question: Am I missing something here? As far as I can tell Premiere CS5 and 5.5 offers all the same (at least the primary) capabilities AVID or FCP previously offered AND is capable of working with After Effects with no 3rd party software aide. I see no reason not to switch to Premiere.

Is this the way the industry is going? Are professional FCP Post houses considering the same?

Being that I am currently building this company, I want to make sure I am setting it up the most efficient way possible, and as far as I can tell, Premiere may be the way to go –

We’re nearly in an equal situation. I did now my second project on Premiere Pro after using FCP for years and I’m thankfull that Apple “forced” me do that. The only thing I really miss is Color. But I’ m looking forward to use Resolve when the direct exchange between Premiere and Resolve works.

Premiere Pro 5.5 is the FCP8 upgrade you were waiting for.

    Hi Zach….

I use both FCP and PPro.

To me they are very close and the transition will be pretty easy for you.
There are some nuances to be sure. Some areas where PPro is ahead, some where it has some catching up to do.

But I think Adobe is listening (you can tell by their participation here) and as Pro products are their mainstay, they are committed to this space.

I’ll be doing a webinar in October. Side by side of both apps. Contact me if you’re interested. audell999 (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Thank you all so much!! This has been very reassuring. I feel better knowing that I’m not just spouting off nonsense! I feel more confident in making the move. I am sure Adobe is gearing up (even more so) to take on a more professional level of editing. Crazy though – I would have laughed my a** off if you told me I’d be making this switch 10 years ago! Again thank you all so much, and Alex I am not aware of webinar, but it sounds like something I would absolutely be interested in, as well as the rest of my staff!

I personally love Premiere for multiple reasons including: Fast playback, detecting pitch in playback, ease of use when it comes to splitting and using the timeline to add/remove clips, and producing.

Honestly, production has been one of the hardest parts of using FCP – it doesn’t easily allow you to product in various formats. Premiere makes it really easy and with just a little research it’s clear everything you’re looking for is right in front of you.
