does anyone else ever find the need to import an omf back into fcp?

I often find myself wishing this could be done. I cut a promo export the omf to the sound designer and he has to lay it back to tape. Why couldn’t I import the omf and have it back in my system mixed…..this way I could export the mixed spot out for the web or whatever without capturing it back form tape.

I wouldn’t want to be the ginny pig on this one……. I think I am goign to sit back for a few months and learn alot more before i attempt to upgrade the os and fcp so close together……. Ken Stone made the last upgrade pretty seemless with this little gem https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_4_upgrade_phil.html Hopefully Ken will have Phil post the next wave of chaos and how to get through it succesfully. It is still a good article and will help you with some basics of upgrading.

Tom, I apologize for the misconception that the discount was that minimal. I guess I should do a little more research before spouting off. But at even half the price then paying 400 for the upgrade aren’t you essentiallly paying around the same price for a now “legal” professional verison. The Educational version was used for the purpose of educating the students on the application. Now that it is going to be used to make money they do the right thing. I feel this would promote students who are mostly broke after finishing school and trying to find jobs to keep using the educational software in the professional world until they land enough jobs to layout another grand. Right or wrong if Apple wants to keep pulling in the younger generation don’t stab them in the back once you have them hooked.

trying to visualize what it is exactly your trying to accomplish brings up one problem……. Your going to jump cut back to the live talent after you “de-ice” them. are you shooting them on a green screen or in a studio setting. A green screen might work better to allow the background to stay alive….. even if nothing is happening it will still look alive as opposed to a complete freeze frame……. post you test shoot when you do it and share your results……have fun

I side with you on the subject. Whats to say you didn’t buy a dual g5 while in shcool…does that mean once you graduate you cant use it on a professional level? It does get a bit sticky. As far as I remeber the Educational Discountis only 100-200 bucks right…… Maybe Apple is being a bit cheap when they won’t allow a former student to “professionalize” his gear. And for 100-200 bucks…… How many could there be to upgrade from ed. to pro?….. 25000? 50000? I am sure the meal/entertainment (vegas) budget for NAB and Macworld is a much larger loss.

have you been using fcp to make any money?

  • I have had the problem in the past myself, as cumbersome as it is i suggest one of the many risers on themarket and if you can find it a usb fan. i bought one about 8 months ago adn went back a week later to get one for a friend and the storre no longer sold them. i have a little widget that displays the temp. lifting the pb up and using the fan while running fcp and photoshop or others app at the same time the tem p stays around 115. without the riser and fan it gets up around 145…..definatly not good for your little precious. your friends will tease you at first but you get used to it.

just a word to the wise about time remapping keep the clip as short as possible. you may even want to export the bits you are remapping as individual clips. the less handle you have the better you can tweak it.
