    thanks, dan. this works, but it appears to be giving me little flickers of movement (not smooth). i got similar results even in just doing a time*rate or timeToFrames(time)*rate situation. any thoughts?

    thanks for getting back to me. what seemed to be the problem was that my hat and guy object were nested in a null. once i took them out, and changed their axis and clustered them – this technique worked.

    this is also really helpful for just understanding the way expressions can use text. i had never utilized split or charAt

    if i wanted an expression to look at a character, like the “L” how would i do that? just not multiply by 1?

    motionscript.com, if you havent already. i think dan tells you the books to check out there, too. but generally after effects books devote only a chapter or two to expressions. otherwise google’s just going to have to be your best friend in this case (that and this creative cow forum)
