Thanks Dennis, I appreciate the reply – though I rather think that CS6 is going to last me longer than I originally thought. And there I was going around recommending PPro as the FCP replacement. I wonder if Grass Valley are planning on going cloudy?

I’m currently working on three projects –

1) A website re-write in html 5, using Edge Animation and Photoshop (a freebie job for a flying club)
2) A scheduling system/front end for CasparCg initially for the university where I work, using Flash Professional and Photoshop.
3) A promo piece for the uni, using PPro, AE and Photoshop.

When these are done, I may not use an Adobe product for months. Doesn’t matter – the CS6 Creative Suite can sit on the computer doing nothing till I need it again.

Since Todd is writing in this thread, perhaps he can give me a cost effective way of upgrading when the time comes. I know that a huge number of occasional users would like to know the answer.

It might be a good idea to look at a range of editing systems, all of which are pretty similar if you’re starting from scratch, and find one with which the hardware choices are both easier and cheaper.

There – I didn’t say Premiere Pro or Edius on a PC at all. Ooops

Our 60mBit internet connection comes courtesy of the fibre optic cable from Virgin. All of our services – phone, tv, internet come from them, so we’re a bit bound up with them these days.

I certainly watch a lot less real time tv these days, because of the Tivo box that’s also part of the service. YouTube is one of the channels, but I haven’t seen any of my family (19-66 ages) watching it too much, if at all. Unless YouTube feel like buying Suits or Spooks or whatever, I can’t see them taking over tv.

Surely Apple is now an iGadget company, and almost not a computer maker at all. Their huge profits are made by iPhones, and the huge drop in their share price is based on Samsung now beating them in sales. Having set themselves on this course, they have to keep introducing new sorts of iToys, otherwise investors will take their cash elsewhere – an iPhone X just won’t cut it. I’m still betting on 2015 as a crunch point – and also holding on to my ARM shares.

With their cash mountain they could have just kept churning out new model MacPros every few months if they’d wanted to. They are, after all, just PCs running a different operating system. Apple don’t want to make PCs any more, so they aren’t, apart from the high margin pretty toys that don’t expand without new technology which isn’t – and may never be – well supported in the industry outside Apple. Just like Firewire 800 was(n’t).

If I was a psychology student, I’d ask the Cow for a complete listing of this forum over the past two years – it’s been amazing watching the hopes, fears and aspirations, which seem to have really reached a close now, as most seem to be migrating to Premiere Pro. Probably, very quietly, they’re picking the PC based version, since they can have new expandable gear whenever they wish.

I do wonder if this isn’t just badge engineering again. Nvidia cards are made to a reference design, so that it’s very likely that any “Mac” card is just the same as all the others inside. What the company are doing about drivers – which is what matters – isn’t clear, as they don’t offer OSX drivers on their site, as far as I can see. Do FreeBSD driver work on a Mac, now that the operating system shares much with OSX –
