Given that all the parts of an ordinary computer are rectangular one wonders what exactly is the point of a tube. Buy a rectangular box, put in motherboard of your choice, add CPU, GPUs, drives, RAM, power supply, of your choice. They’re all rectangular. Add OSX from your Apple store. Save lots and lots of money and have a machine that’s always upgradable or modifiable whenever you want.
Who on earth would ever dream of buying this useless thing?

Which Windows would that be?
At the flying club where I’m a member, I look after the computers of which we now have four. Because we run mostly on cast-offs and rebuilds each one has a different operating system – Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Linux Mint (which was OpenSuse till recently).
XP – old now and showing it, but pretty solid and reliable
W7 – Excellent. All a desktop operating system should be
W8 – Complete rubbish – can’t find anything. It’s as if they set out to make things difficult
Linux Mint – Like all Linux, very user friendly as long as you don’t want to do anything. There to stop people playing with a mission critical system.So – which Windows don’t you like? I switch between each of these and OSX, just in the same way one might get out of one make of car and into another. No big deal – where’s the switch for the headlights?

I know you keep bashing on about how fast and wonderful new PCs are, but this is predominantly an FCPX forum so it’s no big surprise we use Macs.

Apple computers that use the x86 architecture are PCs, just either our of date or lacking in the ability to modify or easily expand. Try putting a GeForce 680 or a Haswell CPU in your iMac.
I still have my G4, though mostly gutted now, because it’s such a pretty machine – I can’t bear to chuck it in the skip. When the Hackintosh gets too old – though I don’t use it much these days – it too will be gutted and its case and drives will be recycled into some new machine. Try doing that with your iMac.

I’m just endlessly astonished at the loyalty people show for a company that long ago lost interest in them. Like a teenage girlfriend you just can’t get over even though she’s now married to someone else, 32, 280lb and has three kids.
MacPros are now museum items, just like my G4. iMacs are really only suited by their limitations to the reception areas of advertising companies and facilities houses.
Out there, if you just look, there is the most enormous bewildering variety of gear that is not just up to date, but continues to change and update by the month. You just have to open the door of your locked in little room and look around.

I just read the description in the article that Joseph posted at the top of the thread –
“…..is said to support dual GPU, making it capable of supporting three monitors from the get go. There will supposedly be no Firewire 800, optical drive or ability to expand internal hardware. Thunderbolt I/O is expected to be on board…..”
Sort of a hobbled desktop PC then, with lots of opportunities for Apple to over-charge on the peripherals. No wonder James Daugherty is throwing his toys out of the pram.
Some suggestions –
Asus Z87 motherboard (or whatever)
Intel Core i7-4770K S1150 3.5GHz 8MB Haswell Quad Core Processor Unlocked (or whatever)
NVidia GeForce GTX 680 – two if you want (or AMD if you prefer)
As much memory as you can afford
As many drives as you want + optical and SSD if you wish
Big monitors, small monitors – take your pick.Buy tomorrow at your nearest stockists
Forget all this speculation.

Asus make all kinds of components, as well as complete computers, and they are quality stuff. I’ve been using their motherboards and graphics cards for 15 years, and have never been disappointed. And luckily for you, they will soon have a Z87 board which does Thunderbolt – the Z87-DELUXE/DUAL. Not entirely sure how useful that will be though.
There isn’t really any such thing as a Windows computer. Windows is just another operating system like OSX or Fedora or Android. Asus make computers and components based around the x86 architecture, just like Foxconn make for Apple. I’m running OSX on one of the other Asus based machines here next to me.

Intel just two days ago released the new generation of Core i7 and Xeon processors (Haswell). GigaByte amongst others are releasing boards for the chips – https://uk.gigabyte.com/press-center/news-page.aspx?nid=1218 – but there’s no Thunderbolt included. You just plonk your GeForce into the appropriate socket, and your drives into the slots provided. Pick a monitor from the thousands available and connect to DVI or HDMI. Maybe Thunderbolt just isn’t going to happen in the big world outside Apple.
As for Quadros – I understand that if you’re doing heavy CAD or 3d rendering you might want such things, but I still haven’t grasped why someone who is just editing ordinary video, even with several layers in various formats needs such high powered and high price engineering.

Well, whatever – Starbucks in the UK seems to have discovered that people can vote with their feet where coffee is concerned.
Apple is a similar easy target for those who might think they could act as a corporation in a more human way. Just don’t buy a new iPhone – and you certainly don’t need to keep worrying about a new Macpro. Just buy a PC. Put OSX on it if you must.
And maybe suggest to Apple that they could do with their billions useful things in the same way as the Gates have.
