I have a 2006 MacPro 1,1 and was recently looking for ways to extend it’s life. I came up with a number of things I can do but, I’m wondering if it’s worth it based on the cost.

Here’s what I was looking at:
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT: $129
    or
    ATI Radeon 5770: $250
    32 GB RAM: $819
    STARDOM Pro Drive: $130
    750GB SSD Hybrid Seagate Drive: $168 x 2 = $336
    2.0TB Western Digital Caviar Hard Drive: $108 x 2 = $216

I figure a new video card, more ram, and a SSD hybrid drive for my OS/applications would probably result in some significant speed improvements but is it enough to justify the $1752 price tag? Is anyone running a system like this? I want to figure out how well this system would work for things like 3D text or Optical Flares in After Effects, 1080 to 2K footage in FCP or Premiere, etc… before I drop the $.

If this system would still choke on most things I’m doing now (on a newer MacPro) I figure it’s best to just put the money towards a brand new computer – unfortunately, with the new MacPro’s supposedly coming out this Fall I feel like that’s probably what my new system should be rather than getting something like an iMac (the shelf life on those can’t be that long). Decisions… decisions…

Any and all help/suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks!

I wouldn’t put anymore money into a 1,1 Mac Pro. OS X 10.7.x is the last Mac OS to support them (because they are 32-bit machines, not 64-bit) and I figure $2,000 towards any other Mac will yield a better ROI than trying to beef up a 7yr old machine.

Andrew is correct. You have a 32 bit machine that is not supported by any modern PCI card manufacturer that is only writing 64 bit drivers. This 1,1 was manufacturered in 2006. It’s 2013. You can go onto ebay, and buy a wonderful 2009 4,1 Machine for about $1000, and then run modern cards and 64 bit software. Do you really want to put money into a 2006 clunker, that can’t be used next year ? You know, AVID’s used to cost $80,000, and no one can use these old products anymore (new AVID software is $995). And Sony 1″ VTR’s used to cost $80,000. ITS OVER. However, your 1,1 will work wonderfully in your office to print invoices, make labels, and let you surf porn on the internet.

Yeeeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing but I don’t know if an non-upgradable iMac is a good choice either (especially since I have a 30″ Dell monitor and would rather not pay for the iMacs screen that I wouldn’t use).

Yeah. I have that machine. It’s junk compared to a 2011 iMac or 2012 iMac. After all those upgrades, you still won’t have USB3, thunderbolt, or a processor or GPU as good as an iMac. Nor will you have sandy or ivy bridge which will further enhance FCP X. And have you looked at the price of 32mb for iMac? About $150. iMac comes with a nice 27″ monitor as well.

I think you might be on to something here… Need to crunch some numbers but that’s probably the best way to go.

hahaha! At least it’s not completely useless. Thanks Bob

Yeah I’ve got a 2.1 gathering dust in the corner – recently replaced by top of the line iMac with 32GB RAM and Fusion drive – great machine with an unexpected side effect – I rarely turn on my AC anymore – the iMac runs so cool I’m saving tons of money on my AC.

Bob’s suggestion is also a good one though you’ll never have USB 3 or Thunderbolt – 2 things I could never live without.

By the way I have a 30″ Dell and Dreamcolor – Dell attached via Apple Thunderbolt to dualink DVI adapter and Dreamcolor attched via BMD Thunderbolt to HDMI – so your Dell will be well used.

Uber iMacs now available in Apple refrub store for huge discount! Or wait for the new MacPro…

    Not.

I’m just endlessly astonished at the loyalty people show for a company that long ago lost interest in them. Like a teenage girlfriend you just can’t get over even though she’s now married to someone else, 32, 280lb and has three kids.

MacPros are now museum items, just like my G4. iMacs are really only suited by their limitations to the reception areas of advertising companies and facilities houses.

Out there, if you just look, there is the most enormous bewildering variety of gear that is not just up to date, but continues to change and update by the month. You just have to open the door of your locked in little room and look around.

I know you keep bashing on about how fast and wonderful new PCs are, but this is predominantly an FCPX forum so it’s no big surprise we use Macs.
