I can’t really see the world swapping millions of miles of ethernet and 23 years of development for some new thing that’s largely Apple-centric and as yet hardly developed at all. Its a bit like the thread a while back that speculated that the new MacPro would make a good server for datacentres. Not a chance in a million years, and those who thought it might work obviously have never seen the pics of such places or looked at the specs of the machines used there. Koolaid fuelled idiocy. I think that maybe Thunderbolt will be largely ignored in the big world, much like Firewire 800, apart from those companies that can see a profit in overcharging for special cables etc.

An interesting and very competent review. One has to wonder – just what proportion of video professions need all that RAM etc, and how many will lash out all that money just because it’s a MacPro, and they have expensive gadget lust. I’ve just completed my first hour-long show for some time – being mostly retired now – shot on three cameras recording in ProRes LT. This PC is a long way now from being the fastest, but it coped perfectly well with its i5-750 and 8Gb ram. Rendering maxed out the CPU, as designed, but not the ram, and the two screens in front of me accommodated Premiere Pro CS6 without trouble. When I need to upgrade I’ll just rip out the motherboard etc and bung in new bits.
Just down the road from me they make the McLaren P1 and I see them around the place. I don’t actually need one to get around though, my Toyota Avensis does the job perfectly well. Most people don’t need the fastest or flashiest. Actually no-one needs a McLaren P1.

Are they really different? My Hackintosh, now largely returned to being a PC since the demise of FCP7, runs a standard GeForce card perfectly well.
Actually, it would be interesting to run a cost comparison between a new MacPro and the equivalent parts list from dabs.com or wherever. When done before with the iMac, the parts at retail ran at around half price.

I’ve never been able to understand why anyone wouldn’t put a data centre in a very cold place. I was reading a while back that companies used hot sweaty Virginia because the coal is cheap there. Somehow there are so many things wrong with that……
So good for Facebook – a cold place with cheap hydro electricity and the chance probably to use waste heat for something useful. Excellent.

Not, I think, at the size the BBC needed, and with the flexibility they wanted. The BBC creates material in orders of magnitude larger than pretty much anyone else, including major post houses. It wasn’t going to work 5 years ago, and it wouldn’t work now.
It certainly wasn’t going to work ten years ago when I was making an in-house BBC doc about bomb disposal officers, and I had to explain that if they had this system they wouldn’t be able to to put my rushes onto the common system, nor have my editing notes, because we’d made an agreement with the Army. The IT people didn’t live on the same planet as I did.

Always interesting to hear that sort of comment. It would be quite good fun to get people who say “x is garbage” about any big and disparate thing – a make of car, a type of food, whatever – and ask them to explain themselves in depth.

(I don’t agree with either of those over-simplifications, by the way)In this case, sort of Top Trumps for operating systems. Is he talking about Windows 8 or 95 – is he comparing with OS9 or Mavericks? A complex subject worthy of complex discussion.
With baited breath (which we aren’t going to hold for too long), we await a full and comprehensive answer from Mr Roesler……

An interesting concept though – branding a version of your operating system with someone else’s brand.
If Apple needed the money……actually Google doesn’t need the money either…….
Anyway, if Apple needed the money, they could have OS X Hershey Bar.

I think a really good way to tell “where the puck is” is to go to the exhibitions. Walk round IBC or NAB and see what the stands who are selling something else are using as an editor. A few years ago it was all FCP. Now – difficult to say from BVS in London. Perhaps someone going to IBC in Amsterdam will offer some insight, though I think it might still turn out to be fragmented.
