That’s because no-one is buying Renault any more. They have to show the F1 cars as they don’t make an ordinary car that people want.

Indeed they are, at least a part of it. Clearly not to the professionals who hang out here. I wonder why?
I used to be a promotions producer at the BBC, and we did lots of “who are the target audience” stuff. In this case, they seem to be following the old “if in doubt, give them an explosion” method. In certain circumstances, that’s what we’d. I’ll let you work out the circumstances.

Well, to my mind 2001, then an amalgam of Darth Vader and Batman. Then going back to 2001.So, who is it trying to impress?
Sci-fi geeks. That’s it really. They’re not trying to impress you – at least not the professional you, otherwise they’d be talking spec, and not doing style over substance.Why?

Yes, and I think it’s very good. Also CC looks better than CS6, but I won’t be getting that. PPro is an easy move on from FCP7, though I still prefer FCP7.
..and anyone not yet settled on new stuff should also check out Edius, another good system.

I don’t know what it’s like elsewhere, but the refusal of people to accept that they’ve got to learn a bit of technology to do a job seems to be endemic here in the UK. I used to run DV camera courses at the BBC, and the first thing I asked was “Who gave up physics at 15 and never wanted to see it again?”. Almost all hands – on this course for assistant producers – would go up. “Well, tough” I would say. These days I explain to students that Rembrandt would not have been able to paint that way unless he had learned a lot about paint creation and the use of canvas first. “Who’s Rembrandt?” is generally the reply.
You can’t “just edit” in the same way as you can’t just take good photos. You have to have training, knowledge, aptitude and application for both. And not knowing what a codec is means that when they’ve finished their amazing edit they won’t know what to do with it.
Teach them properly or don’t teach them at all. And if they can’t hack a proper editing system of whatever kind, point them at Windows Movie Maker or iMovie.

This seems to have been around quite a while without an answer from anyone. Sadly “just buy new machines” is the only option. These machines are from 2007 – going on seven years ago. Almost the stone age in computer terms. The only way to upgrade them is to remove the motherboard, processor, memory, graphics card, power supply, displays, and replace with new. You might be able to keep the outer case.

Indeed. Nothing is forever, and I’m sure if they found a cheaper or more efficient alternative they’d take it. When FCP looked like the future, there was much thought on getting together the cash to buy Macs for just that, but that whole scene has gone away now.
For editing Edius is standing in the wings being much promoted by a part time lecturer who also does work for Grass Valley. It’s an excellent low cost editing system which is the standard in some countries. If I didn’t have to major on PPro, that’s the one I’d be using.

“The one I work for is pretty much completely Adobe, because they got a deal years ago which included the whole Master Collection. It means that all kinds of courses can be covered using the same software set. I don’t know how CC will affect them, but I think they might be ok, given that I’ve just been given the whole lot for free on some related deal.
For students, learning one NLE is much like learning another if they are starting from scratch. For the university, they need to keep their costs down, so PCs and Adobe it is – for now.

I have no idea of the management abilities of all these huge companies, I just wonder if it might be common sense not to build a workaday computer in a shape that doesn’t lend itself to any reasonable kind of flexibility
