I use PPro CC, MC7, and a little bit of X. They all have their upsides (love Keywords in X) and I can happily use any of them, however Premiere is definitely my favourite. If Adobe hadn’t jumped us all in the showers with their CC agenda I think there would be a lot more support for it because as an app it really is excellent. That said I think it’s important to distinguish between the two groups of people who need to choose their NLE – individual editors and post houses. As an individual editor I think now more than ever it’s important to know all 3 mentioned above as this will increase the number of jobs you are able to accept or apply for. If someone offers you work and you have to turn it down because you can’t use the software then you’re needlessly limiting yourself. Plus by knowing these main 3 NLE’s you’re hedging your bets in terms of which (if any) will eventually conquer all and which will eventually EOL. Of course not everyone has the luxury of being able to learn more than one NLE, but I would highly recommend it if possible.
In terms of post houses and production companies etc. their choice gets a little more complicated as they often need to replace/add more software and hardware than individuals do, plus consider wider more complicated workflows, therefore any change becomes a larger investment. As an individual editor I can’t comment too extensively on this but there are plenty of people on here who can. I think what you will tend to find is people trialing new software on their own time working on personal projects until they feel confident that they can use it to a professional standard.

Thanks Craig, amidst the uncertainly within the NLE market it’s interesting to see where Media Composer might go. Like you say, pure speculation, but I always wondered why some aspects of it just never seemed to really develop. Not that I don’t like MC, in fact there are some excellent features, but things like Marquee, Title Tool, and Avid FX feel truly 1980’s. Not sure how other MC users feel about this but for a company that can balance it’s books so well (at least it’s cash-flow) you’d think they’d have the resources to develop MC a little more rapidly. I guess MC isn’t their top priority.

I noticed that too, that the more cores you want the slower the processor speeds are. Why?
3.7GHz quad-core with 10MB of L3 cache
3.5GHz 6-core with 12MB of L3 cache [+ £400.00]

2.7GHz 12-core with 30MB of L3 cache [+ £2,800.00]

There’s a clip around 1 minute in with a Japanese guy that looks like he’s controlling little hovering helicopter things through his body movement. I’d love to know more about that.

Hi Jeremy,
I just tried to recreate the problem to take a few screenshots and it’s not happening! Everything is importing as it should now. I think what may have happened is that originally when I was selecting the folder to import from I was just highlighting it, then hitting Import, rather than actually twirling down the folder to see the clips stored within. When you mentioned above that X handles the two actions slightly differently I tried the latter and the clips imported fine so maybe now X is seeing them correctly all the time.
When X rewraps the .mxf P2 files to .mov does it still require the original P2 source to read the .mov files or are they independent? Can I delete the P2 card folder? I don’t want to lose the disk space that the .mov files now take up.
