Here’s what I did today re ingestion…
– I copied the PRIVATE folder from the card onto my desktop; then used FCPX to ‘import from camera’ (open archive etc, select files). Over half of them ‘failed’ to import.

Remember when you’re copying the files from the camera make sure you copy the ENTIRE folder structure as it exists on the camera. Copying just one folder over (Private) might be your problem…

Sounds as if the port is bad. There are no settings that I know of that would cause this problem

It’s the shallow flange depth on the camera. The sensor is just too close to allow built in ND between it and the back plane of the mounted lens. I own one and it’s a fantastic camera. I also use screw on ND filters and/or a matte box, just as I have for years and years of shooting both still and motion picture film. Good quality glass filters (Tiffen) in no way cause any degradation of the image. Any kind of filter you want, you can get, and of course, you can stack them for additional effects. No issue in my opinion.

I’ve experienced the same problem. The easiest (not elegant) solution is to delete the clips from the browser and re-import the files from their folder on your raid. Don’t need to import from disc, just from what’s already been imported and residing on your HDD. There’s no duplication of files when they re-appear in the browser.

Unfortunately, you will run into another issue. FCP does not add the proper pulldown cadence for an XDCAMHD 24p timeline and any motion footage is going to look strange on an SD timeline. I found this out the hard way on a recent project. The only way to get a good SD copy is going out through a Kona card to tape and letting it add the correct pulldown.

I was going to respond to this thread in general, but Nigel, your previous response sums up my feelings better than I could have written.

I too owned the HVX200 and couldn’t get past the P2 workflow and the prosumer feel of the camera.

I now own a Sony 350 and have been, on the most part, satisfied. It’s not a 900 or a Varicam, but for the price it just can’t be beat (IMHO). I’ve worked in this business for 25 years now starting with film, moving to Betacam and others inbetween, and ending up with XDCAM HD. To date I’ve shot docus in very low light conditions, long form corporate video and entertainment based programming with my 350. Probably over 100 hours so far…

While my workflow in FCP isn’t perfect, I’ve never had a problem with the discs and the images are truly astounding. Call me a believer.

That being said, the bottom line for any camera purchase should be a thorough test. Buy the camera that looks best and works best for you within your budget. If I were in a larger market or had clients needing a higher end finish, I would be looking at other cameras.

OK, I did it right the first time. I had opened up 5.1.4 that I have on another mac, copied the proper name convention, loaded it into the presets and restarted.

BUT, when I try to transfer my footage back it goes thru the process, and as it’s finished, I get an error message that the export failed, make sure the deck is in the proper format, etc. (I’m not at the system right now). I’ve got a disc loaded with the right preset (1080p 24, 35Mb/s), recorded something on it to check it but it won’t transfer my 1080p 24 timeline back over. I don’t have a deck, I’m going back to my 350.

I have just experienced this problem today. Right after I updated my software to the current patch. A seven minute timeline is over 5Gb.

I’m thinking it’s the update.
